Disegna Antonio, disegna e non perder tempo
“Disegnia antonio disegnia antonio, disegnia e non perder tempo” così scrissi su verso di un foglio in cui avevo tracciato due Madonne. Ma a chi era rivolta quella frase?
Quel foglio lo adoperai anche per annotare un altro appunto relativo a un pagamento effettuato il 4 ottobre del 1524 per il renaiolo che portava la rena alla Basilica di San Lorenzo.
Il foglio in questione appartiene alle collezioni del British Museum e comprende due studi a penna e inchiostro sul recto con tratteggi paralleli appena incrociati. In tutte e due le figure più marcate si nota che la luce che le illumina proviene da sinistra.
Secondo il WIlde l’annotazione del pagamento è successiva allo studio delle figure e quindi il foglio è da datare non oltre l’ottobre del 1524.
Sul medesimo foglio sono presenti le copie di entrambi i disegni a matita rossa, in scala maggiore e con una resa molto più debole realizzati probabilmente dallo stesso Antonio citato nell’annotazione di mia mano.
Ma chi era Antonio?
Era il mio garzone Antonio Mini e costantemente lo esortavo a esercitarsi con l’arte del disegno senza perdere tempo in sciocchezze.
Queste due mie Madonne le avevo realizzate proprio a scopo didattico. Osservate la loro posizione sul foglio: al fianco di entrambe è presente uno spazio dove il Mini poteva copiarle.

Draw Antonio, draw and don’t waste time
“Draw antonio draw antonio, draw and don’t waste time” so I wrote on the back of a sheet of paper on which I had drawn two Madonnas. But who was that sentence addressed to?
I also used that sheet to jot down another note relating to a payment made on 4 October 1524 for the sandmaker who brought the sand to the Basilica of San Lorenzo.
The sheet in question belongs to the collections of the British Museum and includes two pen and ink studies on the recto with slightly crossed parallel hatchings. In both of the more marked figures we notice that the light that illuminates them comes from the left.
According to WIlde, the annotation of the payment occurred after the study of the figures and therefore the sheet should be dated no later than October 1524.
On the same sheet there are copies of both drawings in red pencil, on a larger scale and with a much weaker rendering, probably made by the same Antonio mentioned in my annotation.
But who was Antonio?
It was my boy Antonio Mini and I constantly urged him to practice the art of drawing without wasting time on nonsense.
I had created these two Madonnas of mine precisely for educational purposes. Observe their position on the sheet: next to both there is a space where the Mini could copy them.
