La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Beatrice Cenci scolpita dall’artista americana Herriet Hosmer.

Di fatto l’opera Beatrice Cenci è la prima scultura in cui l’artista volle rappresentare un personaggio storico italiano, soggetto fra le altre cose di un’opera teatrale scritta da Percy Bysshe Shelly.

La scultura fu commissionata per la Biblioteca Mercantile di St. Louis e rappresenta la giovane ragazza che a soli sedici anni fu giustiziata, nel 1599, per aver tramato assieme al fratello e alla matrigna, l’omicidio del padre, i conte Francesco Cenci, che aveva abusato i lei.

La scultrice Hosmer volle raffigurare la ragazza adagiata sopra una panchina della prigione, avvolta nel lenzuolo e con il capo posato sopra un cuscino.

Ha un’aria malinconica e pensierosa, la stessa che probabilmente ebbe la notte prima della propria crudele esecuzione.

Fissa lo sguardo sul rosario che tiene nella mano sinistra, ultima ancora di salvezza.

L’opera di Hosmer ebbe un grande impatto emotivo quando fu presentata al pubblico. L’artista fu capace non solo di cogliere l’innocenza della giovane costretta a subire gli abusi del padre ma anche di mostrare quanto sia ingiusto il mondo.

Beatrice Cenci fu l’opera che più di altre portò alla ribalta Herriet. In un primo momento fu esposta al pubblico alla Royal Academy di Londra poi negli Stati Uniti fra Boston, Filadelfia, New York e St. Louis.

Ma non solo.

Fu molto apprezzata da Susan Antony, leader dei diritti delle donne e fu punto di svolta nella vita della stessa Hosmer che da allora in poi si impegnò attivamente con il movimento delle suffragette in America.

Sul retro della base la Hosmer firmò l’opera con la dicitura HARRIET HOSMER SCULPSIT ROMÆ

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Beatrice Cenci sculpted by the American artist Herriet Hosmer.

In fact, the work Beatrice Cenci is the first sculpture in which the artist wanted to represent an Italian historical figure, the subject among other things of a theatrical work written by Percy Bysshe Shelly.

The sculpture was commissioned for the Mercantile Library of St. Louis and represents the young girl who, at the age of sixteen, was executed in 1599 for having plotted, together with her brother and her stepmother, the murder of her father, Count Francesco Cenci, who he had abused her.

The sculptor Hosmer wanted to depict the girl lying on a prison bench, wrapped in a sheet and with her head resting on a pillow. She has a melancholic and thoughtful look, the same one she probably had the night before her cruel execution.
She fixes her gaze on the rosary she holds in her left hand, her last lifeline.

Hosmer’s work had a great emotional impact when it was presented to the public. The artist was able not only to capture the innocence of the young girl forced to suffer her father’s abuse but also to show how unfair the world is.

Beatrice Cenci was the work that brought Herriet to the fore more than others. It was initially exhibited to the public at the Royal Academy in London, then in the United States between Boston, Philadelphia, New York and St. Louis. But not only.

It was much appreciated by Susan Antony, a women’s rights leader and was a turning point in the life of Hosmer herself who from then on actively engaged with the suffragette movement in America.

On the back of the base Hosmer signed the work with the words HARRIET HOSMER SCULPSIT ROMÆ
