La Scultura del giorno: l’Angelo Caduto di Toso
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’Angelo Caduto scolpito da Onorato Toso nel 1910 per la Tomba Ribaudo, ubicata nel porticato semicircolare del cimitero di Staglieno a Genova.
Toso diede forma a un angelo con un corpo femminile che, invece di accompagnare il defunto verso la gloria dei cieli, diventa più terreno e si sdraia letteralmente sulla tomba coprendosi il volto con la mano sinistra in un atto di disperazione.
L’angelo si abbandona completamente al dolore assumendo una posa serpentinata. Le grandi ali distese e la veste panneggiata che sottolinea le sue forme rende l’opera molto sensuale, rimandando ancora una volta col pensiero a Eros e Thanatos.
Lo scultore Onorato Toso era nato a Milano nel 1860 ma deve la sua notorietà, oggi passata però in secondo piano, a questa straordinaria scultura dell’Angelo Caduto che commuove chiunque abbia modo di vederla di persona.
Struggente e ricca di pathos, tocca le corde dell’anima.
La Tomba RIbaudo divenne celebre in tutto il mondo quando fu scelta dai Joy Division per la copertina del singolo uscito nel 1980 dal titolo “Love will tears us apart”.

Sculpture of the day: the Fallen Angel of Toso
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Fallen Angel sculpted by Onorato Toso in 1910 for the Ribaudo Tomb, located in the semicircular portico of the Staglieno cemetery in Genoa.
Toso gave shape to an angel with a female body who, instead of accompanying the deceased towards the glory of heaven, becomes more earthly and literally lies down on the tomb, covering his face with his left hand in an act of desperation.
The angel abandons himself completely to the pain, assuming a serpentine pose. The large outstretched wings and the draped dress that underlines her forms make the work very sensual, once again bringing to mind Eros and Thanatos.
The sculptor Onorato Toso was born in Milan in 1860 but owes his fame, which has now faded into the background, to this extraordinary sculpture of the Fallen Angel which moves anyone who has the opportunity to see it in person.
Poignant and full of pathos, it touches the chords of the soul.
The RIbaudo Tomb became famous throughout the world when it was chosen by Joy Division for the cover of the single released in 1980 entitled “Love will tears us apart”.
