La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Pleiade Perduta scolpita dall’artista americano Randolph Rogers modellata nel 1875 e tradotta in marmo a partire dal 1875.

La Pleiade è la personificazione di una delle sette sorelle la cui storia viene descritta da Ovidio nel poema Fasti.

La luminosità della Pleiade venne offuscata dalla vergogna che provò nell’aver sposato un mortale e nel cielo notturno cercò con grande apprensione di raggiungere le sorelle molto più brillanti di lei.

Si tratta dell’ultimo lavoro di grandi dimensioni di Randolph Rogers e mostra tutta la grazia che aveva nel realizzare opere autoportanti slanciate in avanti.

Sembrava quasi non avessero peso le sue sculture piene di movimento.

La Pleiade Perduta con il busto nudo e quel drappo che le scende dalla schiena e le copre le gambe regalandole quel dinamismo, riscosse fin da subito un enorme successo.

Rogers ricevette continuamente richieste di repliche di questo capolavoro fino a oltrepassare le cento commissioni.

Se volete apprezzare dal vivo la prima versione della scultura in questione, dovrete necessariamente sorvolare l’oceano Atlantico per raggiungere l’Art Institute of Chicago.

Sculpture of the day: The Lost Pleiad by Randolph Rogers

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Lost Pleiade sculpted by the American artist Randolph Rogers modeled in 1875 and translated into marble starting from 1875.
