La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Il Sonno del Dolore e il Sogno della Gioia di Raffaele Monti: una figura leggiadra ed eterea che ha però una chiara allusione politica.

L’opera fu scolpita dall’artista nel 1862 con l’intento di presentarla l’anno successivo all’Esposizione Internazionale di Londra. La sua costanza nel proporre quasi sempre figure con il volto velato lo avrebbe portato negli anni a seguire poco a poco all’oblio.

La ripetizione degli stessi tratti distintivi nelle sue opere per lui fu deleteria.

La scultura del Sonno del Dolore è fortemente allegorica. Quella figura slanciata che si eleva verso l’alto fu particolarmente apprezzata dal pubblico e dalla critica fin dalla sua prima apparizione pubblica.

La donna è completamente nuda e ha un velo che le copre il volto, le scende sul braccio sinistro e le panneggia le gambe.

Ebbene, quel sottile velo che non cela le forme ma le mette in evidenza, simboleggia il sogno della gioia che sovrasta la figura femminile addolorata presente sul piedistallo, avvolta da tulipani e rose.

In pratica il Sonno del Dolore è la figura in basso mentre il Sogno della Gioia è la donna che stacca i piedi da terra.

Per quanto leggiadro possa sembrare l’intero complesso scultoreo, lo scultore Raffaele Monti la rivestì di un significato prettamente politico.

Di fatto è la rappresentazione della situazione di allora dell’Italia e al momento di rinascita a cui l’artista volle alludere dopo il marzo del 1861.
