Il Busto di Elena scolpito nel marmo di Carrara fra il 1816 e il 1817 dal grande Antonio Canova, verrà battuto all’asta a Londra da Sotherby’s.

La scultura che celebra la figura mitologica greca di Elena di Troia sarà la punta di diamante della vendita Old Masters Part I che avrà luogo a Londra il 6 luglio 2023 durante la Classic week.

La stima dell’opera neoclassica è compresa fra i 2,5 e i 4 milioni di sterline equivalenti in questo momento a 2,9 e 4,6 milioni di euro.

Il Busto di Elena fu regalato da Canova in persona al politico inglese Robert Castlereagh come riconoscimento degli sforzi che aveva fatto per garantire il ritorno delle opere d’arte in Italia trafugate dalle truppe napoleoniche.

L’opera poi passò di mano da erede in erede rimanendo sempre fra le mura della residenza della famiglia Castlereagh.

La testa decorata con i riccioli che così bene identificano il grande Canova, nel corso della storia è stata esposta solo due volte al pubblico. La prima nel 1972 alla Royal Academy of Arts di Londra e l’ultima nel 1997 all’Ashmolean Museum di Oxford.

Prima di essere battuta all’asta da Sotherby’s, il Busto di Elena viaggerà attorno al mondo. Sarà proposto al pubblico a Hong Kong dal 24 al 28 maggio, a New York dal 10 al 14 giugno e tornerà a Londra per la mostra che precederà la vendita, prevista dal 1 al 6 luglio.

Il Busto di Elena di Troia fa parte della serie delle teste ideali scolpite da Canova che l’artista realizzò durante la sua carriera.

Canova at auction: Elena is up for sale

The Bust of Elena sculpted in Carrara marble by the great Antonio Canova between 1816 and 1817 will be auctioned in London by Sotherby’s.

The sculpture that celebrates the Greek mythological figure of Helen of Troy will be the spearhead of the Old Masters Part I sale which will take place in London on 6 July 2023 during the Classic week.

The estimate of the neoclassical work is between 2.5 and 4 million pounds, currently equivalent to 2.9 and 4.6 million euros.

The Bust of Helena was given by Canova himself to the English politician Robert Castlereagh in recognition of the efforts he had made to ensure the return of the works of art to Italy stolen by Napoleon’s troops.

The work then changed hands from heir to heir, always remaining within the walls of the Castlereagh family residence.

The head decorated with the curls that so well identify the great Canova has only been exhibited to the public twice throughout history. The first in 1972 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the last in 1997 at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Before being auctioned by Sotherby’s, the Bust of Helena will travel around the world. It will be offered to the public in Hong Kong from 24 to 28 May, in New York from 10 to 14 June and will return to London for the exhibition that precedes the sale, scheduled for 1 to 6 July.

The Bust of Helen of Troy is part of the series of ideal heads sculpted by Canova that the artist created during his career.
