Dopo il Concilio di Trento la censura si abbatté come una mannaia sul Giudizio Universale, obbligando Daniele da Volterra prima e il Carnevali poi a coprire chiappe e altre parti scoperte dei corpi affrescati.

Per la volta della Sistina però non fu così. Nonostante di nudi ce ne fossero tanti di censure se ne contano pochissime tanto da stare tutte sulle dita di una mano.

Gli unici due piselli che furono oscurati son quelli dei figli di Noè nel riquadro dell’Ebbrezza. Dipinsi Cam e Iafet a distanza ravvicinata e si vede che la loro prossimità col membro al vento turbò i pensieri di qualche alto prelato.

L’intervento fu eseguito con molta probabilità dal Mazzuoli in modo discreto e quasi impercettibile. Il restauratore non dipinse a secco un panneggio ma si limitò a rendere più evidente l’ombra in quella zona.

Esiste anche un’altra censura sulla volta ed è quella che che fu effettuata nella lunetta di Salomon, Booz e Obeth. In quel caso fu coperto un seno della madre che culla il bambino dopo averlo allattato.

E’ un censura che niente ha a che fare con il Concilio di Trento e fu eseguita nella prima metà dell’Ottocento.

Due pesi e due misure verrebbe da pensare: per il Giudizio furono realizzate 44 braghe in tempi diversi mentre per la volta furono oscurati due piselli e una poppa.

Tutte e tre gli interventi di censura sono stati rimossi nel corso dell’ultimo restauro.

After the Council of Trent, censorship fell like a cleaver on the Last Judgment, first forcing Daniele da Volterra and then Carnevali to cover the buttocks and other uncovered parts of the frescoed bodies.

The intervention was probably carried out by Mazzuoli in a discreet and almost imperceptible way. The restorer and painter did not dry-paint a drapery but limited himself to making the shadow in that area more evident.

There is also another censorship on the vault and it is the one that was carried out on the lunette of Salomon, Boaz and Obeth. In that case, a breast of the mother who cradles the baby after breastfeeding him was covered.

It is a complaint that has nothing to do with the Council of Trent and was carried out in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Two weights and two measures one would think: for the Judgment 44 breeches were made at different times while for the vault two peas and a stern were obscured.
