La Madonna spesso nelle opere mie ma anche in quelle di altri artisti e scultori, viene raffigurata con un libro fra le mani. Lo avete mai notato?

A volte la Madonna è intenta a leggere, altre ha solo il libro aperto davanti a sé e tiene il segno con un dito per non perdere il filo del discorso mentre in alcune occasioni il volume è chiuso.

Cosa simboleggia quel libro e cosa ci sarà scritto sopra?

La Madonna è la figura di passaggio fra Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento. Dio si incarna attraverso di lei e questo accadimento già era stato preannunciato proprio nell’antico testamento.

Nel versetto VII di Isaia sta scritto: “Ecce virgo concipiet et pariet filium, et vocabitur”. Nel caso della Vergine annunciata come quella di Antonello da Messina probabilmente la Madonna sta leggendo ciò che fu scritto in antichità sul proprio conto.

Altra questione è quando il libro compare nelle mani della Vergine che già stringe fra le sue braccia il Figlio come accade nelle mie opere.

In quel caso probabilmente il libro raffigurato potrebbero essere i Vangeli. Con un salto temporale nel futuro, io e i miei colleghi artisti, mettevamo fra le mani della Madonna il destino del Figlio.

Non è un caso che le mie Madonne non guardino mai direttamente il Bambino ma anzi, mostrino sempre uno sguardo che riesce a vedere al di là di quello che gli si presenta davanti agli occhi.

Quell’espressione malinconica della Vergine è dovuta alla conoscenza di ciò che accadrà a Cristo e la consapevolezza che dovrà affrontare il tragico momento della Passione.

The Madonna often in my works but also in paintings by other artists and sculptors, is depicted with a book in her hands. Have you ever noticed it?

Sometimes the Madonna is intent on reading, at other times she only has the book open in front of her and she holds her sign with a finger so as not to lose the thread of the conversation while on some occasions the volume is closed.

What does that book symbolize and what will be written on it?

The Madonna is the figure of passage between the Old and New Testaments. God incarnates through her and this event had already been announced in the Old Testament.

In verse VII of Isaiah it is written: “Ecce virgo concipiet et pariet filium, et vocabitur”. In the case of the Virgin announced as that of Antonello da Messina probably the Madonna is reading what was written in antiquity about her.

Another question when the book appears in the hands of the Virgin who already holds her Son in her arms as happens in my works. In that case the book depicted could probably be the Gospels. With a time leap into the future, my fellow artists and I often placed the fate of her Son in the hands of the Madonna.

It is no coincidence that my Madonnas never look directly at the Son but rather, they always show a gaze that she can see beyond what appears before her eyes.

That melancholy expression of the Virgin is due to the knowledge of what will happen to her Son and the awareness that she will have to live the tragic moment of her Passion.
