Il Battistero di Firenze riapre le porte al pubblico dopo che lo scorso ottobre era stato chiuso per consentire di allestire il cantiere che permetterà ai restauratori di prendersi cura dei 1.200 metri quadrati di mosaico mosaico che decorano l’interno della cupola.

Come previsto dalla tabella di marcia, entro il 20 gennaio del 2023 saranno terminati i lavori di realizzazione dell’intero cantiere il cui costo sarà sostenuto interamente dall’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Ma non è finita qua: c’è una bella sorpresa per tutti in arrivo.

Il cantiere in via di realizzazione consentirà al pubblico di salire fino alla cupola per ammirare da vicino i mosaici e vedere i restauratori all’opera su queste preziose tessere che da lungi danno lustro al magnifico Battistero di San Giovanni.

Immaginatevi la meraviglia che ci aspetta nel poter guardare da così vicino quegli antichi mosaici che scintillano ad ogni bagliore, con le loro tessere dorate.

Il rivestimento a mosaico della cupola fu effettuato a partire probabilmente dal 1270 ed è suddiviso in otto spicchi. Il mosaico su fondo dorato richiese anni di lavoro prima di essere portato a termine. Probabile che vennero impiegate maestranze veneziane supportate da quelle locali.

I cartoni dell’inferno furono realizzati da Coppo di Marcovaldo mentre le prime Storie del Battista furono attribuite a Cimabue e al Maestro della Maddalena. Per quanto riguarda la raffigurazione del Paradiso, si pensa che i cartoni possa averli realizzati Meliore.
