Quado avevo poco più di cinquant’anni ed ero impegnato in quel di Firenze con il progetto della Sagrestia Nuova, Paolo Giovio, un assai colto vescovo di Como, si mise a scrivere una biografia su di me: il Michaelis Angeli Vita.

La sua fu una biografia a tratti assai aspra sebbene fra quelle pagine non manchino lodi al mio operato. E’ vero che Giovio mi ammirava, c’è poco da fare, ma quando si mise a mettere nero su bianco il mio carattere si lasciò prendere un po’ troppo la mano:

“D’altra parte a un genio così alto ha fatto riscontro un carattere tanto rude e selvatico da informare la sua vita domestica a un’incredibile grettezza e privare i posteri di discepoli che continuino la sua arte. Pregato infatti persino dai principi, mai si è lasciato indurre a fare da maestro a qualcuno o almeno ammetterlo nella sua bottega come
osservatore.“

Insomma ai suoi occhi non avevo un bel carattere, per carità: sulle opinioni personali non si può discutere. Sentirsi però appellato come rude e gretto non è che mi fosse garbato più di tanto. Per carità, non è che avesse proprio tutti i torti ma è vero anche che diventavo intrattabile solo con chi se lo meritava.

Selvatico si, ecco. Gradivo solo la compagnia di chi m’andava a genio e il resto del tempo preferivo usarlo per fare qualcosa di più costruttivo piuttosto che perderlo in chiacchiere di poco conto.

Giovio però scrive anche che a tanta ostilità nei confronti degli altri corrispondeva pure una buona dose di genialità sopraffina. Nella sua biografia molto letteraria mise a paragone l’eminenza del mio ingegno con l’asprezza del carattere.

“Tanto nel dipingere che nello scolpire il toscano Michelangelo Buonarroti è giunto – per fama costante e per comune consenso- tanto vicino all’eccellenza degli artisti antichi, che insigni esponenti dell’una e dell’altra arte gli hanno assegnato con franco riconoscimento la meritata palma”

La solitudine che Giovio sottolinea nel Michaelis Angeli Vita non era esattamente la mia reale condizione di vita: semplicemente non avevo motivo di vantare amicizie né di parlare apertamente delle mie relazioni. I fatti miei riguardavano la vita privata e tali preferivo rimanessero.

Sono numerosi i testi scritti dai contemporanei e le lettere che scrissi io stesso o che mi inviarono cari amici che dimostrano quanto in realtà fosse ben articolata la mia rete di relazioni che comprendevano sia personaggi illustri che persone assai più modeste ma non per questo meno importanti per me.

A harsh biography but full of praise: the Michaelis Angeli Vita

When I was just over fifty years old and was engaged in Florence with the project for the New Sacristy, Paolo Giovio, a highly educated bishop of Como, began to write a biography about me: the Michaelis Angeli Vita.

His biography was at times quite harsh, although there is no lack of praise for my work among those pages. It is true that Giovio admired me, there is little to do, but when he began to put pen to paper my character let himself be carried away a little too much:

“On the other hand, such a high genius was matched by a character so rude and wild as to inform domestic life to an incredible narrow-mindedness and deprive posterity of disciples who continue his art of him. In fact, prayed even by princes, he never allowed himself to be induced to teach someone or at least admit them into his workshop as
observer.”

In short, in his eyes I did not have a good character, for heaven’s sake: there is no question of his personal opinions. Feeling called as rude and narrow-minded, however, is not that he was polite to me that much. For heaven’s sake, it’s not that he was really wrong but it’s also true that I became intractable only with those who deserved it.

Wild yes, that’s it. I only enjoyed the company of those I liked and the rest of the time I preferred to use it to do something more constructive than to lose it in small talk.

Giovio, however, also writes that such hostility towards others also corresponded to a good dose of superfine genius. In his very literary biography he compared the eminence of my wit with the harshness of character.

“Both in painting and sculpting the Tuscan Michelangelo Buonarroti has come – through constant fame and common consent – so close to the excellence of ancient artists, that distinguished exponents of both art have awarded him with frank recognition the deserved Palm tree”

The loneliness that Giovio points out in Michaelis Angeli Vita was not exactly my real condition in life: I simply had no reason to boast of friendships or to speak openly about my relationships. My business was about private life and I preferred it to remain so.

There are numerous texts written by contemporaries and letters that I wrote myself or that dear friends sent me that demonstrate how well my network of relationships was actually well-articulated, which included both illustrious personalities and people much more modest but no less important for myself.
