Lo sfregio ai danni del Cristo di Santa Maria sopra Minerva
Un brutale sfregio perpetrato a danno del Cristo Portacroce di Santa Maria sopra Minerva lo ha deturpato per sempre. È una vicenda poco nota accaduta secoli or sono che ha come protagonisti i frati domenicani. Incredibile ma vero.
A solo un anno di distanza dall’aver consegnato il tanto atteso Cristo Portacroce a Metello Vari, l’opera fu danneggiata di proposito.
I frati domenicani avevano messo in atto un insensato e sistematico programma di distruzione delle antichità all’interno della chiesa e del convento attiguo.
Durante questa follia, il mio Cristo Portacroce, al tempo privo di quell’orribile orpello in bronzo che gli copre i genitali, fu evirato di proposito.
Pirro Ligorio riporta l’accaduto in un suo scritto, oggi incluso nel Canone Italiano 138 appartenente alla Bodleian Library di Oxford.
“Non altrimenti che fecono al tempo del pontificato di Clemente VII a la più bella statua del nostro Salvatore ala quale tagliarono il membro virile, et poi l’han coperto, non portando rispetto né al testamento di coloro che fecion fare né a Cristo”

La parte dei genitali di Cristo oramai danneggiata per sempre, fu coperta poco dopo, prima della morte di papa Clemente VII de’ Medici, avvenuta nel settembre del 1534, giusto per darvi un ordine temporale.
Quel Cristo che tanto m’aveva fatto penare e che poco mi piaceva per colpa dell’intervento scellerato di Pietro Urbano, garbò invece parecchio a Francesco I re di Francia che mi chiese il permesso di fare un suo calco dal vero per farselo spedire in Francia. Cosa che poi non andò in porto grazie al cielo.

The Defacement of the Christ of Santa Maria sopra Minerva
A brutal defacement perpetrated against the Christ Carrying the Cross of Santa Maria sopra Minerva has disfigured it forever. It is a little-known event that happened centuries ago and has the Dominican friars as protagonists. Incredible but true.
Only a year after having delivered the long-awaited Christ Carrying the Cross to Metello Vari, the work was damaged on purpose.
The Dominican friars had implemented a senseless and systematic program of destruction of the antiquities inside the church and the adjacent convent.
During this madness, my Christ Carrying the Cross, at the time without that horrible bronze ornament that covers his genitals, was purposely castrated.
Pirro Ligorio reports the event in one of his writings, today included in the Italian Canon 138 belonging to the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

The part of Christ’s genitals, now damaged forever, was covered shortly after, before the death of Pope Clement VII de’ Medici, which occurred in September 1534, just to give you a temporal order.
That Christ who had made me suffer so much and who I didn’t like much because of the wicked intervention of Peter Urban, instead pleased Francis I, King of France, who asked me for permission to make a cast of him from life to have it sent to France. Which then didn’t come to fruition, thank goodness.
