Il salvadanaio di Lorenzo de’ Medici
Il gomito sinistro del duca d’Urbino Lorenzo de’ Medici posa sopra una scatola-salvadanaio con una testa di pipistrello.
Gli esperti a lungo hanno dibattuto sul significato di questo particolare oggetto. Come sapete nelle mie opere non realizzai niente a caso e tutto è riconducibile a qualcosa di ben preciso.
Fra le interpretazioni date più plausibili in particolare ce ne sono due da tenere in considerazione.
Il salvadanaio potrebbe essere la rappresentazione della parsimonia oppure, come si faceva nell’antichità, potrebbe raffigurare proprio la morte.
Non finisce qua però. Al di sopra di questo dibattuto oggetto c’è qualcos’altro: un fazzoletto oppure una borsa contenente danari.
Io propendo per pensare sia una borsa, magari vuota perché è stata appena adoperata per riempire la scatola sottostante?
Un po’ come la clessidra che segna lo scorrere del tempo la vita par essere un sacchetto di danari da mettere nel salvadanaio poco a poco: quando il sacchetto è vuoto e la scatola-portadanari piena, il corso dell’esistenza è giunto al termine.

Experts have long debated the significance of this particular object. As you know, in my works I did nothing by chance and everything can be traced back to something very specific.
Among the most plausible interpretations given, in particular, there are two to be taken into consideration.
The piggy bank could be the representation of thriftiness or, as it was done in ancient times, it could represent death itself.
It doesn’t end here though. Above this debated object there is something else: a handkerchief or a bag containing money.
I tend to think it’s a bag, maybe empty because it has just been used to fill the box below?
A bit like the hourglass that marks the passage of time, life seems to be a bag of money to be put into the piggy bank little by little: when the bag is empty and the money box full, the course of existence has come to an end.
