Oggi voglio entrare con voi dentro il Giudizio Universale per raccontarvi qualcosa che chissà già non conosciate.

Nel gruppo dei così detti angeli tubicini, quelli che suonano le trombe per risvegliare le anime dei morti per intenderci, volli aggiungere altri due angeli apteri nella parte più bassa del gruppo.

Quello sulla sinistra tiene in mano un libro piccolo e lo rivolge verso le anime che stanno ascendendo verso il Paradiso. Dalla parte opposta, un angelo con il panneggio arancio si inginocchia sorreggendo a fatica un libro molto più grande e pesante dell’altro tanto che viene aiutato da un altro angelo.

Vi siete mai chiesti cosa stanno a simboleggiare questi due libri?

Prima di me quei due libri non erano mai stati raffigurati nel Giudizio. E’ molto probabile che li rappresentai in virtù del versetto dell‘Apocalisse 20,12 “I morti vennero giudicati in base a ciò che era scritto in quei libri, ciascuno secondo le sue opere”.

Quei libri appunto, come sta scritto, li volli affrescare così. In quello più piccolo e con poche pagine ci stanno scritti sopra i nomi di chi ascenderà verso il Padre Celeste perché solo in pochi hanno scelto e scelgono ancora la via per la salvezza mentre l’altro più grande, pesante e con molte più pagine riporta uno a uno i nomi di chi sarà dannato in eterno. Non è un caso infatti che l’angelo inginocchiato lo rivolga verso la bocca dell’Inferno e i dannati che con il moto circolare avviato dal gesto di Cristo stanno scendendo verso gli inferi.

Two angels for two books: their meaning

Today I want to enter with you into the Last Judgment to tell you something that who knows what you don’t already know.

Have you ever wondered what these two books stand for? Before me those two books had never been depicted in the Judgment. It is very probable that I represented them by virtue of the verse of Revelation 20.12 “The dead were judged on the basis of what was written in those books, each according to his works”.

Those books precisely, as it is written, I wanted to paint them like this. In the smaller one with few pages there are written the names of those who will ascend to Heavenly Father because only a few have chosen and still choose the way to salvation while the other larger, heavier and with many more pages reports one to one the names of those who will be eternally damned. It is no coincidence that the kneeling angel turns him towards the mouth of Hell and the damned who with the circular motion initiated by the gesture of Christ are descending towards the underworld.
