Lo scalpello trasformato in pennello
Il Mosè che avevo pensato in un primo momento avrebbe dovuto essere molto più grande di quello che vedete adesso, collocato nel secondo dei tre registri del monumento funebre di Giulio II.
Altre cinque sculture di ugual dimensione avrebbero dovuto accompagnarlo. Le cose non andarono come avevo pensato inizialmente e non certo per causa mia: nella basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli a Roma, oggi potete vederlo nella versione finale.
Il Mosè ha il capo rivolto verso sinistra, dalla parte opposta dall’altare molto probabilmente per evitare di guardare proprio i Vincoli di San Pietro dagli Spirituali considerati superstizione.
Il piede destro poggia la pianta a terra mentre l’altro tocca il basamento solo con la punta. Mosè pare giocherellare con la folta barba arricciolandola sopra un dito a metà lunghezza. dividendola in due riccioli che gli ricadono sul petto. Scolpii con maestria la barba tanto da farla apparire naturalmente morbida.
Il mio caro amico Giorgio, più noto come il Vasari, ebbe per me e le mie opere solo parole di lodi e ammirazione. Ecco un sunto di quello che scrisse nelle Vite proprio in merito al mio Mosè “…dove tanta difficultà la scultura, son condotti sottilissimamente piumosi, morbidi, et sfilati d’una maniera, che pare impossibile che il ferro sia diventato pennello…”

The Moses I had thought at first should have been much larger than the one you see now, placed in the second of the three registers of the tomb of Julius II. Five other sculptures of equal size should have accompanied him.

Here is a summary of what he wrote in the Lives precisely about my Moses “… where sculpture is so difficult, the hair is carried very subtly feathery, soft, and pulled out in a way that it seems impossible that the iron has become a brush …”
