Oggi, 29 settembre, il calendario ricorda San Michele Arcangelo e, se vi fosse sfuggito, è anche il mio onomastico e non è affatto un caso se i miei genitori scelsero proprio quel nome per me.

Mica scelsero un Santo per darmi un nome cristiano ma bensì un Arcangelo: insomma, qualcosa di altisonante e importante che portai fino alla fine dei miei giorni con una punta di orgoglio.

Michelangelo deriva dall’unione di Michele che in ebraico significa “Chi è potente come Dio?” e da Angelo dal greco che vuol dire “il messaggero”. L’Arcangelo Michele viene ricordato più volte nella Bibbia sia nel vecchio che nel nuovo testamento. E’ il paladino che difende la fede in Dio contro le milizie di Satana.

L’Arcangelo Michele viene raffigurato costantemente alla tregua di un guerriero armato di spada che infilza, calpesta e uccide un drago. Gli artisti che si sono cimentati con la raffigurazione di questo soggetto sono tanti. Tanto per citarne alcuni voglio proporvi il grande Arcangelo Michele in bronzo realizzato da Peter Anton von Verschaffelt. Da secoli guarda lo Stato del Vaticano e Roma dalla sommità di Castel Sant’Angelo. Sapete, quell’opera lì venne restaurata non troppo tempo fa da Colalucci, il restauratore capo della Cappella Sistina. Strane coincidenze in fondo, no?

Passando alla pittura vale la pena menzionare l’opera di Luca Giordano con l’Arcangelo Michele che sconfigge i demoni. Ve lo propongo a seguire. Si tratta di un olio su tela databile attorno al 1665 che è esposto al Kuntsthistorisches Museum di Vienna. Come vedete l’inconografia dell’Arcangelo è la medesima: sfodera le sue belle ali piumate, la spada e un abito azzurro con tanto di mantella rossa.

Today, September 29, the calendar remembers St. Michael the Archangel and, if he had escaped you, it is also my name day and it is no coincidence that my parents chose that name for me.

They didn’t choose a saint to give me a Christian name but rather an Archangel: in short, something high-sounding and important that I carried to the end of my days with a touch of pride.

Michelangelo derives from the union of Michael which in Hebrew means “Who is powerful like God?” and from Angelo from the Greek which means “the messenger”. Archangel Michael is mentioned several times in the Bible both in the old and in the new testament. He is the champion who defends faith in God against the militias of Satan.

Archangel Michael is depicted constantly at the truce of a warrior armed with a sword who stabs, tramples and kills a dragon. There are many artists who have tried their hand at depicting this subject. Just to name a few, I want to offer you the great Archangel Michael in bronze made by Peter Anton von Verschaffelt. For centuries it has looked at the Vatican State and Rome from the top of Castel Sant’Angelo. You know, that work there was restored not too long ago by Colalucci, the chief restorer of the Sistine Chapel. Strange coincidences after all, right?

Moving on to painting, it is worth mentioning Luca Giordano’s work with the Archangel Michael defeating demons. I propose it to follow. It is an oil on canvas dating back to around 1665 which is exhibited at the Kuntsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. As you can see, the Archangel’s signature is the same: he shows off his beautiful feathered wings, a sword and a blue dress complete with a red cape.
