Giulio II voleva terminassi alla svelta gli affreschi della volta della Sistina. Rimontati i ponteggi per iniziare la seconda parte del lavoro e cominciai a mettere in pratica qualche accorgimento far avanzare più rapidamente l’opera in corso.

Le giornate divennero mano a mano sempre più ampie e meno numerose. Se nella prima metà della volta dipinsi le lunette costantemente in tre giornate, nella seconda parte affrescai quella di Aminadab in due e in una quella di Roboam.

Non ci furono più le trasposizioni dei cartoni con lo spolvero e nemmeno con la tecnica del’incisione: dipingevo direttamente sull’intonaco freschissimo. Solo per le targhe si notano segni di incisione ma li feci direttamente sull’intonaco con corde tese battute: ancora ci sono i fori dei chiodi con i quali le tenevo ferme agli estremi.

Tanta foga mettevo nel dipingere che i miei pennelli si rovinarono assai fino a divenire inservibili. Impastati di colore son rimasti appiccicati agli affreschi un gran numero di peli che raggiungono una quantità incredibile nella lunetta di Roboam.

The haste and the crumpled brushes

Julius II wanted to finish the frescoes of the vault quickly. After reassembling the scaffolding to begin the second part of the work, I began to put some tricks in place to make the work in progress move forward more quickly.

The days became increasingly larger and less numerous. If in the first half of the vault I painted the lunettes constantly in three days, in the second part I frescoed that of Aminadab in two and in one that of Roboam.

There were no more transpositions of the cartons with the dusting or even with the technique of engraving: I painted directly on the very fresh plaster. Only for the plaques there are signs of engraving but I made them directly on the plaster with strung stretched ropes: still there are the holes of the nails with which I held them still at the ends.

I was so passionate in painting that my brushes were ruined a lot until they became useless. Mixed with color, a large number of hairs remained stuck to the frescoes, reaching an incredible amount in Roboam’s bezel.
