In quel frangente ero parecchio impegnato a Firenze.
My self portrait
This drawing that I propose to follow is my self-portrait which, more or less, dates back to 1522.
At that time I was 47 years old and I was just as you see me. Indeed, to be honest, I was a little better: the inexorable passing of the centuries has left traces of itself on the paper, making the right side of the sheet difficult to read.
at that juncture I was quite busy in Florence. Pope Leo X de’ Medici had recently terminated the contract for the construction of the façade of the Basilica of San Lorenzo and had recently entrusted me with the architectural and sculptural complex of the New Sacristy.
I probably made this self-portrait to give it to Bugiardini so that he could make a beautiful painting out of it. Bugiardini set to work painting the picture that now belongs to the Louvre Museum.
My self-portrait, first traced in pencil and reworked in pen and brown ink, is not in a splendid state of conservation and today still belongs to the Louvre Museum. VFor conservation reasons it is rarely exhibited in a poor state of conservation and is located in the same museum but precisely because of issues related to the delicacy of the work, it is not exhibited to the public.
Your always Michelangelo Buonarroti
