Non ho mai domandato all’amore ricchezze, privilegi o ricompense. L’onesto amore pretende assai meno.

spero a’ mie stanchi e lassi
pensier riposo a qualche tempo ancora;
ben sarebb’ora l’ora,
Donna, s’agli occhi vostri
contraria è l’alma, e io, pur contro a quella,

The Face of Love: The Eyes Do Not See Where Truth Dwells

Many think that contemplating a face is enough to know a soul. I have never believed this. I have seen in marble, as in people, a form that offers itself to the gaze and a truth that remains hidden. This is why I wrote these verses, preserved in various versions between the 1540s and 1546.

“For what I desire, lady, I see from without, although the eye cannot penetrate the truth…” I do not mean to deny the beauty of woman, but to make clear the limitations of man.

The eye stops at the surface; truth dwells deeper, where no mortal sight can penetrate.

Just as marble conceals figures, the heart preserves a reality that the face does not always reveal.

I prefer uncertainty to certainty, which might hurt me

Since I cannot know what lies within a woman, I allow my thoughts to rest a little longer.

Perhaps some will consider this a weakness. I consider it rather a mercy granted to the lover.

If I could truly read the heart of the one I love, perhaps I would find there a truth more painful than doubt itself. Therefore, I write that knowing more could be worse than my own pain.

There are illusions that sustain the soul more than certainty.

When the eyes promise pity but the heart harbors cruelty

What most torments a man in love is not beauty but the discord between what appears and what truly lives in the soul.

The eyes can promise sweetness, compassion, and comfort to my tears. They may seem moved by sincere pity. But if cruelty dwells within that heart, then every promise becomes merely a deception.

I do not blame the eyes, which are nature’s faithful servants. I point to that distance that sometimes separates the face from the soul.

Honest love desires only that the soul resemble the face

I have never asked love for riches, privileges, or rewards. Honest love demands much less.

It would only like what appears on the outside to conform to what lives within.

If the eyes show kindness, the heart should truly preserve it. If the face manifests pity, the soul should also be inhabited by it.

This is the harmony I sought in my sculptures and my rhymes: the correspondence between form and spirit, between visible beauty and hidden truth.

And yet I continue to love even knowing I am deceived.

Finally, I confess what is perhaps the truest part of my madrigal. Perhaps the woman’s soul is opposed to the sweetness of her eyes. Perhaps that beauty hides a heart incapable of pity.

Yet I continue to delight in that deception.

Not because I ignore the danger, but because I know the power of beauty. It draws man in even when reason warns him.

The intellect recognizes the illusion; the heart nevertheless continues to love it.

In this madrigal I have sculpted a soul more than a poem

Many see in these verses a love poem. I have sought in them the same truth I pursue when I take up chisel and mallet.

The eye stops at beauty. Love desires to go beyond.

And it is precisely in this distance, between what we see and what we cannot know, that man’s torment arises and, at the same time, the very reason for my poetry.

spero a’ mie stanchi e lassi
pensier riposo a qualche tempo ancora;
ben sarebb’ora l’ora,
Donna, s’agli occhi vostri
contraria è l’alma, e io, pur contro a quella,
godo gl’inganni d’una donna bella.
