Mercoledì 25 marzo 2026 alle ore 17.00, l’Accademia Nazionale di San Luca apre nuovamente le porte al pubblico per il secondo appuntamento dedicato al cantiere di restauro del Telemaco di Luigi Bienaimé. Un’occasione rara per osservare da vicino tecniche, metodologie e altri dettagli del restauro applicato alla scultura neoclassica.

Osservando da vicino il restauro artistico

L’iniziativa consente ai visitatori di entrare nel cuore del lavoro conservativo, seguendo in tempo reale le operazioni svolte dalle restauratrici. Il Telemaco, collocato all’ingresso dell’Accademia, rappresenta il figlio di Ulisse e Penelope ed è uno degli esempi più significativi della produzione di Bienaimé.

Il cantiere aperto permetterà ai visitatori di comprendere come si interviene su superfici delicate come il gesso, materiale originale dell’opera.

Una campagna dedicata al Neoclassicismo

Il restauro del Telemaco rientra in una più ampia campagna promossa dall’Accademia, che coinvolge anche Venere con la mela (1813) del maestro danese Bertel Thorvaldsen, figura centrale del Neoclassicismo europeo e maestro dello stesso Bienaimé.

Il progetto è realizzato con il supporto dell’Associazione LoveItaly e sotto la supervisione scientifica di Fabio Porzio, conservatore della collezione dell’Accademia, in accordo con la Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Roma.

Collaborazioni e sostegno al patrimonio

Il restauro della Venere con la mela si inserisce nel progetto “Arte Fuori dal Museo”, promosso dal Ministero della Cultura insieme a LoveItaly e Federalberghi Lazio, con il contributo di Hotel Nord Nuova Roma.

Per il Telemaco, invece, il sostegno arriva dal Cavaliere del Lavoro Pierluigi Toti, mentre l’intervento è affidato alle restauratrici Gabriella Caterini e Carola Tavazzi di Artificia Consorzio.

Il valore storico del Telemaco

L’intervento non è solo conservativo, ma anche conoscitivo. Il restauro permetterà infatti di approfondire la storia dell’opera e il legame tra Bienaimé e l’Accademia, che lo nominò professore di scultura nel 1844.

Dell’opera esistono altre versioni significative: una replica conservata all’Accademia di Carrara e una versione in marmo acquistata nel 1839 dallo zar Alessandro II Romanov, oggi custodita presso il celebre Museo Ermitage.

Restoration of Bienaimé’s Telemachus: Visit to the Open Workshop in Rome

On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 5:00 PM, the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca will once again open its doors to the public for the second event dedicated to the restoration of Luigi Bienaimé’s Telemachus. This is a rare opportunity to observe firsthand the techniques, methodologies, and other details of restoration applied to neoclassical sculpture.

Observing Artistic Restoration Up Close

This initiative allows visitors to delve into the heart of the conservation work, following the restorers’ operations in real time. Telemachus, located at the entrance to the Accademia, represents the son of Ulysses and Penelope and is one of the most significant examples of Bienaimé’s work.

The open workshop will allow visitors to understand how to work on delicate surfaces such as plaster, the work’s original material.

A campaign dedicated to Neoclassicism

The restoration of the Telemachus is part of a broader campaign promoted by the Academy, which also includes Venus with an Apple (1813) by the Danish master Bertel Thorvaldsen, a central figure of European Neoclassicism and Bienaimé’s teacher.

The project is being carried out with the support of the LoveItaly Association and under the scientific supervision of Fabio Porzio, curator of the Academy’s collection, in agreement with the Special Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome.

Collaborations and Heritage Support

The restoration of the Venus with an Apple is part of the “Art Outside the Museum” project, promoted by the Ministry of Culture together with LoveItaly and Federalberghi Lazio, with the contribution of Hotel Nord Nuova Roma.

For the Telemachus, support comes from Pierluigi Toti, Cavaliere del Lavoro, while the restoration is entrusted to restorers Gabriella Caterini and Carola Tavazzi of Artificia Consorzio.

The Historical Value of the Telemachus

The restoration is not only conservative, but also informative. The work will provide insights into the history of the work and the connection between Bienaimé and the Academy, which appointed him professor of sculpture in 1844.

Other significant versions of the work exist: a replica preserved at the Carrara Academy and a marble version purchased in 1839 by Tsar Alexander II Romanov, now housed at the famous Hermitage Museum.
