Michelangelo 550: io sul letto di morte dipinto dal Furini
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, avvenuta il 6 marzo del 1475, vi propongo opere che mi riguardano da vicino.
Oggi vi mostro il dipinto a olio su parete realizzato da Francesco Furini che mi ritrae sul letto di morte.
Fa da pendant all’episodio in cui la mi mamma incinta di me cade da cavallo, dipinto posizionato sulla porta a sinistra. Quest’opera invece si trova sopra la porta sinistra e mi mostra in fin di vita.
Sono semi disteso su letto e sul comodino si distinguono nettamente un Crocifisso, due candelieri e un vaso con i fiori.
La luce tremolante delle candele rischiara l’aria mentre tre figure femminili mi fanno compagnia nell’ora del trapasso. Non sono donne reali bensì allegorie delle tre virtù teologali: Fede, Speranza e Carità.
Il dipinto fu realizzato nel 1628 dall’artista Francesco Furini, artista fiorentino che molto fu influenzato dallo stile del Passignano e da Biivert.
L’opera era stata commissionata dal mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane per rendermi omaggio all’interno di quella che voleva trasformare in una casa museo, in via Ghibellina.
Oltre alle allegorie delle virtù, sulla sena si muovono altri personaggi difficilmente identificabili. Giusto per fare un po’ di chiarezza, nella mia casa a Macel de’ Corvi a Roma, durante le ultime ore di vita fui assistito costantemente da tre carissimi amici: Daniele da Volterra, Diomede Lioni e il mio amato Tommaso de’ Cavalieri.

Michelangelo 550: me on my deathbed painted by Furini
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, which took place on March 6, 1475, I propose works that concern me closely.
Today I show you the oil painting on the wall made by Francesco Furini that portrays me on my deathbed.
It is a pendant to the episode in which my mother pregnant with me falls from a horse, a painting positioned on the door on the left. This work instead is located above the left door and shows me at the end of my life.
I am half-lying on the bed and on the bedside table you can clearly see a crucifix, two candlesticks and a vase with flowers.
The flickering light of the candles illuminates the air while three female figures keep me company in the hour of my passing. They are not real women but allegories of the three theological virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity.
The painting was made in 1628 by the artist Francesco Furini, a Florentine artist who was greatly influenced by the style of Passignano and Biivert. The work was commissioned by my great-nephew Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger to pay homage to me inside what he wanted to transform into a house museum, in via Ghibellina.
In addition to the allegories of the virtues, other characters move on the scene that are difficult to identify. Just to clarify, in my house in Macel de’ Corvi in Rome, during the last hours of my life I was constantly assisted by three dear friends: Daniele da Volterra, Diomede Lioni and my beloved Tommaso de’ Cavalieri.
