24 marzo 1844: muore Thorvaldsen a Copenaghen
Il 24 marzo del 1844 il celebre scultore danese Bertel Thorvaldsen, mentre assisteva a una rappresentazione nel Teatro Reale di Copenaghen, si svenne e poco dopo passò a miglior vita.
Thorvaldsen era nato nella stessa città il 17 novembre del 1770. Il padre viveva intagliando nel legno le polene delle navi mercantili mentre la mamma era figliola di un contadino.
Fin da ragazzino si avvicinò al mondo della scultura aiutando in padre a realizzare le polene. Il suo talento prorompente indusse il padre a iscriverlo a soli dodici anni alla scuola gratuita dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Copenaghen.
Nel 1781, fu ammesso al corso di disegno della Royal Academy of Arts e successivamente a quello di modellazione.
La sua abilità e il suo talento non passarono inosservati e, fra i molti premi e riconoscimenti che ottenne, ricevette uno stipendio dalla corona danese che gli avrebbe consentito di portare a termine i suoi studi nella città eterna: Roma.
L’8 marzo del 1797 arrivò nella Città Eterna e trovò casa dinanzi a Piazza di Spagna, in via Sistina.
Passò il tempo e il giovane talento riuscì ad avere a disposizione un grande spazio per mettere su la sua bottega. Nello stesso anno inaugurò il suo primo studio in via del Babuino 119, nell’atelier che in precedenza era appartenuto allo scultore inglese Flaxman.
Fu l’archeologo danese Georg Zoega a prendere sotto la sua ala protettrice il giovane ma promettentissimo Thorvaldsen e lo aiutò a farsi largo nel mondo della scultura nonostante i grandi nomi che c’erano al tempo.
Un nome su tutti? Antonio Canova.
Fu proprio Canova a rimanere affascinato dalla bravura del giovane danese e apprezzò in modo particolare il modello del suo Giasone. Le sue opere cominciarono a essere molto ambite e ricevette numerose commissioni tanto che quel Giasone riuscì a tradurlo in scultura e completarlo venticinque anni più tardi.
Thorvaldsen divenne presto un artista molto impegnato tanto che per finire il suo Giasone ci mise 25 anni. Aveva così tanto lavoro che iniziò ad avvalersi del lavoro di numerosi aiutanti per non rimanere troppo indietro con i lavori.
Nel maggio 1805 l’Accademia delle belle arti di Copenaghen nominò lo scultore membro ordinario e poco dopo, anche l’Accademia delle Belle Arti di Bologna insignì della stessa nomina.
Fu sempre in quel periodo che Thorvaldsen ottenne alcuni incarichi di stato da parte di Napoleone e dal collezionista Giovanni Battista Sommariva per la Villa Carlotta, la sua residenza sul Lago di Como.
A partire dal 1811 insegnò scultura presso l’Accademia di San Luca a Roma, esercitando una profonda influenza sui giovani scultori italiani e stranieri dell’epoca.

March 24, 1844: Thorvaldsen dies in Copenhagen
On March 24, 1844, the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, while attending a performance at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, fainted and passed away shortly thereafter.
Thorvaldsen was born in the same city on November 17, 1770. His father made a living by carving figureheads for merchant ships out of wood, while his mother was the daughter of a farmer.
As a young boy, he approached the world of sculpture by helping his father make figureheads. His bursting talent led his father to enroll him at the age of twelve in the free school of the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
In 1781, he was admitted to the drawing course at the Royal Academy of Arts and subsequently to the modeling course.
His skill and talent did not go unnoticed and, among the many awards and recognitions he received, he received a stipend from the Danish crown that would allow him to complete his studies in the eternal city: Rome.
On March 8, 1797, he arrived in the Eternal City and found a house in front of Piazza di Spagna, on Via Sistina.
Time passed and the young talent managed to have a large space available to set up his workshop. In the same year he opened his first studio in Via del Babuino 119, in the atelier that had previously belonged to the English sculptor Flaxman.
It was the Danish archaeologist Georg Zoega who took the young but very promising Thorvaldsen under his wing and helped him make his way in the world of sculpture despite the big names that were around at the time.
One name above all others? Antonio Canova.
It was Canova who was fascinated by the talent of the young Dane and particularly appreciated the model of his Jason. His works began to be highly sought after and he received numerous commissions, so much so that he managed to translate that Jason into sculpture and complete it twenty-five years later.
Thorvaldsen soon became a very busy artist, so much so that it took him 25 years to finish his Jason. He had so much work that he began to avail himself of the work of numerous assistants so as not to fall too far behind with the work.
In May 1805, the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen appointed the sculptor as an ordinary member and shortly after, the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna also awarded him the same nomination.
It was also during that period that Thorvaldsen obtained some state commissions from Napoleon and from the collector Giovanni Battista Sommariva for Villa Carlotta, his residence on Lake Como.
From 1811 he taught sculpture at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, exerting a profound influence on young Italian and foreign sculptors of the time.
