Il 21 febbraio del 1508, finalmente fu posizionata sulla facciata della basilica di San Petronio a Bologna, la grande opera che avevo realizzato per papa Giulio II.

La scultura in bronzo che lo ritraeva minaccioso più che magnanimo, molto era piaciuta al pontefice che si sentiva perfettamente rappresentato da quell’imponente colosso.

Dopo due fusioni, la prima venuta proprio male e la seconda riuscita solo per metà, il grande Giulio II in bronzo aveva avuto la necessità di essere sottoposto a un lunghissimo lungo lavoro di rinettatura.

Issato nella nicchia sopra il portale principale di San Petronio, i Giulio II della Rovere in bronzo sarebbe stato inaugurato qualche tempo dopo, il 18 marzo dello stesso anno.

Alto quasi cinque metri a sedere in trono, pareva maledire invece che benedire i presenti ma era così che l’aveva voluto proprio il papa.

Oggi di quel capolavoro non rimane nulla ma non fu il tempo a consumare i suoi lineamenti ma i Bentivoglio. Tornati al potere per poco tempo, fecero subito distruggere quell’opera. Fatta cadere a terra, fu salvata solo la testa.
