Obbligato dalle circostanze ad andare a Bologna per chiedere perdono al papa, appena arrivato al suo cospetto Giulio II invece di farmi tornare a lavorare alla sua sepoltura, mi commissionò una enorme scultura in bronzo che lo ritraesse.

A Bologna non ero da solo. Avevo al mio fianco tre validi collaboratori: Pietro Urbano, Ludovico del Buono e Lapo d’Antonio. Di soldi ce n’era pochi e così s’era presa a pigione una casetta, più piccola di quelli che oggi chiamate monolocali. Si dormiva tutti in un letto e per andare a fare i nostri bisogni c’era d’arrangiarsi alla meno peggio.

Dopo due fusioni, la prima venuta proprio male e la seconda riuscita solo per metà, il grande Giulio II in bronzo ebbe bisogno di un lungo lavoro di rinettatura.

Finalmente, dopo essere stato issato nella nicchia sopra il portale principale di San Petronio, era pronto per essere svelato a tutti.

Il 18 marzo del 1508 fu fatto cadere a terra il panno che lo copriva e i bolognesi poterono ammirare quel Giulio II che poco tolleravano. Quel colosso in bronzo a sedere, alto quasi cinque metri pareva maledire invece che benedire i presenti ma era così che l’aveva voluto proprio il papa.

Non fu il passare del tempo a consumare i suoi lineamenti ma furono i Bentivoglio a far distruggere quel colosso. Poco dopo tornarono al potere, seppur per breve tempo, e ordinarono di abbattere l’opera. Fu fatta cadere al suolo e venne salvato solo il capo.

Sia la testa che il resto del corpo fatto a pezzi furono inviati a Ferrara come pagamento di un importante debito che Bologna aveva contratto col duca Alfonso d’Este.

Questa è una storia lunga e articolata ma ganza da sapere. Ve la racconterò nel dettaglio nel prossimo libro al quale sto lavorando già da un po’.

March 18, 1508: the bronze Julius II was inaugurated

Forced by circumstances to go to Bologna to ask the pope for forgiveness, as soon as Julius II arrived before him, instead of making me go back to work on his burial, he commissioned me to make a huge bronze sculpture of him.

In Bologna I was not alone. I had three valid collaborators by my side: Pietro Urbano, Ludovico del Buono and Lapo d’Antonio. There was little money and so they rented a small house, smaller than what we now call one-room flats. We all slept in one bed and to go and do our needs we had to make do as best we could.

After two castings, the first one going really badly and the second one only half successful, the great Julius II in bronze needed a long job of refinishing.

Finally, after being hoisted into the niche above the main portal of San Petronio, he was ready to be revealed to all.

On 18 March 1508 the cloth that covered it was dropped to the ground and the Bolognese were able to admire that Julius II they did not tolerate much. That sitting bronze colossus, almost five meters tall, seemed to curse rather than bless those present but that was exactly how the pope had wanted it.

It wasn’t the passage of time that consumed his features but it was the Bentivoglios who had that colossus destroyed. Shortly afterwards they returned to power, albeit for a short time, and ordered the work to be demolished. It was thrown to the ground and only the leader was saved.

Both the head and the rest of the dismembered body were sent to Ferrara as payment for an important debt that Bologna had contracted with Duke Alfonso d’Este. This is a long and articulated story but great to know. I’ll tell you about it in detail in the next book that I’ve been working on for a while.
