La Pietà Vaticana è il cuore pulsante della cappella che la ospita ma, all’interno di quel luogo, è custodita una mirabile volta affrescata.

Si tratta dell‘unica porzione affrescata di tutta la Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano ed è un peccato poterla osservare solo al di là del cristallo di protezione.

Questi affreschi vennero realizzati quando la Pietà era collocata in un altra cappella della basilica e sono era di Giovanni Lafranco.

Lanfranco lavorò lì tra il 1629 e il 1632 affrescando episodi della Passione di Cristo, collocando al culmine della volta l’Esaltazione della Santa Croce tra un nugolo di angeli.

Ai lati dell’affresco centrale l’artista dipinse otto distinti momenti della Passione.

Sul lato destro si vede la scena della Flagellazione, Cristo davanti a Caifa ed Ecce Homo. Nella lunetta invece Lanfranco affrescò l’Incoronazione di spine mentre sul lato sinistro si può osservare il Tradimento di Giuda, Cristo nell’orto degli Ulivi e Cristo davanti a Pilato.

Nell’altra lunetta, infine, si può apprezzare la Salita al Calvario.

Le otto scene della Passione furono incorniciate con rilievi in stucco dorato realizzati da Agostino Ciampelli.

Giovanni Lanfranco nacque a Parma nel 1582 e la sua formazione artistica si svolse principalmente sotto la guida di Agostino Carracci, uno dei maggiori esponenti della scuola bolognese.

Lanfranco era un maestro dell’invenzione, capace di creare composizioni complesse e dinamiche, ricche di effetti di luce e ombra. Amava rappresentare figure e architetture in posizioni insolite ma era anche molto ricercato dai committenti per i tagli di luce drammatici che sapeva dare alle sue opere.

The Hidden Frescoes in the Chapel of the Vatican Pietà

The Vatican Pietà is the beating heart of the chapel that houses it, but inside that place there is a wonderful frescoed vault.

It is the only frescoed portion of the entire Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican and it is a shame to be able to observe it only beyond the protective glass.

These frescoes were created when the Pietà was located in another chapel of the basilica and were by Giovanni Lafranco.

Lanfranco worked there between 1629 and 1632 frescoing episodes of the Passion of Christ, placing the Exaltation of the Holy Cross among a cloud of angels at the top of the vault.

On the sides of the central fresco the artist painted eight distinct moments of the Passion. On the right side you can see the scene of the Flagellation, Christ before Caiaphas and Ecce Homo. In the lunette Lanfranco frescoed the Crowning with Thorns while on the left side you can see the Betrayal of Judas, Christ in the Garden of Olives and Christ before Pilate. In the other lunette you can appreciate the Ascent to Calvary.

The eight scenes of the Passion were framed with gilded stucco reliefs made by Agostino Ciampelli.

Giovanni Lanfranco was born in Parma in 1582 and his artistic training took place mainly under the guidance of Agostino Carracci, one of the major exponents of the Bolognese school.

Lanfranco was a master of invention, capable of creating complex and dynamic compositions, rich in light and shadow effects. He loved to represent figures and architecture in unusual positions but was also highly sought after by clients for the dramatic cuts of light he knew how to give to his works.
