Il dipinto del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Maria Virgo, opera preraffaellita realizzata dall’artista Louise Greville Cooksey nel 1815.

Il dipinto a olio su tela rappresenta la Maria Vergine che stringe con la mano sinistra un giglio bianco, simbolo di purezza ma anche del momento dell’Annunciazione. E’ la figurazione dell’Amore Divino che scelse proprio quella giovane ragazza per incarnarsi in Cristo.

Ma non è tutto.

I tre fiori di giglio ben visibili sullo stesso ramo, sono completamente aperti e rappresentano la Trinità: Padre, Figlio e Spirito Santo.

L’artista Luoise Greville Cooksey, nata in una famiglia anglicana nel 1878 a Birmingham in Inghilterra, aderì al cattolicesimo romano a circa vent’anni. Dopo questa conversione iniziò dedicarsi alla pittura di paesaggi ma soprattutto figure ecclesiastiche nello stile caratteristico dei preraffaelliti.

Cooksey ebbe modo di approfondire i suoi studi presso la Liverpool School of Art prima di passare alla South Kensington School of Art di Londra dove conquistò sia medaglie d’argento che di bronzo per per le sue opere.

Grazie a una borsa di studio venne in Italia per approfondire le sue conoscenze in campo artistico.

Il dipinto Maria Virgo appartiene alla Galleria d’Arte Russell-Cotes di Bournemouth, nel Dorset, Inghilterra ma presto arriverà in Italia per essere esposto alla mostra “Preraffaelliti, Rinascimento Moderno”.a Forlì che aprirà al pubblico il 24 febbraio 2024.

Painting of the Day: Maria Virgo, Cooksey’s Pre-Raphaelite work

The painting of the day that I propose to you today is Maria Virgo, a Pre-Raphaelite work created by the artist Louise Greville Cooksey in 1815.

The oil painting on canvas represents the Virgin Mary holding a white lily in her left hand, a symbol of purity but also of the moment of the Annunciation. It is the figuration of Divine Love that chose that young girl to incarnate in Christ.

But that is not all.

The three lily flowers clearly visible on the same branch are completely open and represent the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The artist Luoise Greville Cooksey, born into an Anglican family in 1878 in Birmingham, England, joined Roman Catholicism in her twenties. After this conversion she began to dedicate herself to painting landscapes but above all ecclesiastical figures in the characteristic style of the Pre-Raphaelites.

Cooksey furthered her studies at the Liverpool School of Art before moving on to the South Kensington School of Art in London where she won both silver and bronze medals for her works.

Thanks to a scholarship she came to Italy to deepen her knowledge in the artistic field.

The Maria Virgo painting belongs to the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery in Bournemouth, Dorset, England but will soon arrive in Italy to be exhibited at the Pre-Raphaelite exhibition in Forlì which will open to the public on 24 February 2024.
