La Scultura del giorno: la Venere Esquilina
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Venere Esquilina, una scultura ellenistica realizzata nel secolo a.C., appartenente ai Musei Capitolini.
La Venere scolpita nel marmo pario fu rinvenuta nel 1874 sull’Esquilino, dove oggi sorge Piazza Vittorio. Si trovava all’interno di una sala sotterranea degli Horti Lamiani.
Al momento della scoperta fu identificata come Venere Iside mentre in tempi più recenti si è ipotizzato potesse trattarsi invece di una rappresentazione di Cleopatra.
Se l’opera raffigurasse la celebre regina egiziana, il cobra scolpito sul vaso simboleggerebbe la regalità egizia.
La scultura raffigura una figura femminile che si sta legando i capelli. Si può intuire la posa originaria interrotta dalla mancanza delle braccia grazie alla presenza delle dita della mano sinistra sulla chioma.
La donna è priva di vesti e indossa solamente i sandali. In realtà Venere in tutte le sue raffigurazioni non porta mai le calzature e viene raffigurata costantemente a piedi nudi: ecco perché in tempi recenti è stata messa in discussione la sua identificazione.
Al fianco della giovane si vede il vaso avviluppato da un serpe, un cobra in particolare.
L’accurata resas naturalistica del corpo è sorprendente e rispecchia i canoni di bellezza dell’epoca.

Sculpture of the day: the Esquiline Venus
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Esquiline Venus, a Hellenistic sculpture created in the century BC, belonging to the Capitoline Museums.
The Venus carved in Parian marble was found in 1874 on the Esquiline, where Piazza Vittorio stands today. It was located inside an underground room of the Horti Lamiani. At the time of discovery it was identified as Venus Isis while in more recent times it has been hypothesized that it could instead be a representation of Cleopatra.
If the work depicted the famous Egyptian queen, the cobra carved on the vase would symbolize Egyptian royalty.
The sculpture depicts a female figure who is tying her hair. You can guess the original pose interrupted by the lack of arms thanks to the presence of the fingers of the left hand on the hair.
The woman has no clothes and wears only sandals. In reality, in all the depictions of her, Venus never wears shoes and she is constantly depicted barefoot: this is why her identification has been questioned in recent times.
Next to the young woman we see the vase enveloped by a snake, a cobra in particular.
The accurate naturalistic rendering of the body is surprising and reflects the beauty standards of the time.
