“Farò ciò che io saprò, benché non sia mia professione” scrissi rispondendo a una lettera del priore Figiovanni.
Giovan Battista Figiovanni, provveditore alle fabbriche medicee a San Lorenzo nonché canonico laurenziano faceva da intermediario fra me e la famiglia dei Medici.
Era venuto a sapere dall’allora cardinale Giulio dei Medici, successivamente eletto papa col nome di Clemente VII, di voler spendere 50mila ducati per farmi progettare una libreria e una nuova sagrestia per far seppellire le spoglie dei Medici che ancora giacevano in deposito.
All’inizio non ero proprio entusiasta nel sapere che avrei dovuto mettere da parte ancora una volta l’arte della scultura e in particolare le opere per la Tomba di Giulio II per dedicarmi all’architettura.
Alla mia volontà poco importava a Giulio de’ Medici e Figiovanni con pazienza infinita spettò il compito di comunicarmi che ero stato nominato capomastro di quelle architetture senza esitare a dire al cardinale che per intrattenere rapporti con me ci voleva tutta la sua diplomazia tanto che nemmeno Giobbe con la sua proverbiale pazienza avrebbe resistito un solo giorno.
