Degas, Renoir e Manet in mostra a Parma

Degas, Renoir and Manet on display in Parma

On September 16th the exhibition “Edgar Degas and his friends” will open its doors to the public in Parma, bringing the great masters of Impressionism to Italy.

Set up in the setting of Palazzo della Rosa Prati in Piazza del Duomo, the exhibition will put Degas’ artistic production at center stage with his inevitable dancers, placing them alongside various artists who joined the impressionist movement such as Giuseppe de Nittis, Berthe Morisot and the greats French painters Renoir and Manet.

It will be a good opportunity to delve into the poetics and artistic context in which Degas and the painters of his contemporaries worked.

The exhibition itinerary will feature paintings, drawings of significant importance, lithographs, woodcuts but also etchings, books and bronze sculptures dedicated to the sinuous and at the same time ethereal dancers.

The works present will allow you to delve into Degas’s creative intimacy and deepen your knowledge of his ability to capture moving subjects.

Edgar Degas was born on 19 July 1834 in Paris and became one of the most important painters and sculptors of the nineteenth century. He was one of the founders of the Impressionist movement although he considered himself an independent realist.

He had the opportunity to train at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and it was there that he had the opportunity to learn fundamental notions from artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Louis Lamothe. He was particularly appreciated for his mastery of capturing light and movement, he used to paint with rapid brushstrokes proposing unusual perspectives.

Degas loved observing and painting the dancers of the Paris Opera but in later life he began to dedicate himself more fervently to sculpture,

The exhibition “Edgar Degas and his friends” will continue until 7 January 2024 and, in addition to the works of Degas, will offer the general public several more or less well-known contemporary artists such as Morisot, Cassat, De Nittis, Moreau, Raffaelli, Renoir, Manet, Guillaumin Lepic, Forain, Desbutin and Boldini.
