When I was appointed general governor and procurator of the fortifications of Florence
Six days after the terrible sack of Rome, the Republic was proclaimed for the second time in Florence on 17 May 1527.
The Medici were forced to leave the city while Florence would have had to face dramatic months with the imperial troops at the gates and the plague which took away over 3 thousand people that summer.
At that moment I was working on the project for the New Sacristy but I had to suspend everything. Without making any secret of it, I openly sided in defense of the Republic while the reigning Pope Clement VII de Medici hoped that the imperial army would advance.
The protective walls of Florence, however, were still those of the third municipal wall which had been started at the end of the thirteenth century. However, the aggression systems had changed radically since then and would not have been able to withstand the attacks of heavy artillery.
The modernization of the walls was then entrusted to Pietro Navarra and Machiavelli. It was Machiavelli who proposed to fortify the southern ramparts and the pope, in 1526, joined him Antonio da Sangallo to help him carry out that project.
After the proclamation of the Republic, however, those projects can no longer be carried on because they were initiated by the previous Medici government. A heated debate then arose on how to proceed with the work and it was then that I was brought into play.
The then gonfaloniere of the Republic, Niccolò Capponi, on 10 January 1529, made me join the Nove di Militia. A few months later, on April 6 of the same year, the Dieci di balia appointed me general governor and procurator of the fortifications of the walls.
You must know that that appointment was accompanied by great words of praise and high-sounding praise, written more for convenience than conviction. In fact, the magistrates were well aware that I had worked for the Medici family and in order not to create misunderstandings, they wanted to loudly reiterate how solid my republican conviction was.
“Considering the virtue and discipline of Michelangelo di Lodovico di Buonarroti, Your Citizen, and knowing how excellent he is in architecture, in addition to his singular virtues and liberal art (…) and further, how in love and affection for his homeland he is equal to any other good and loving citizen, remembering the hard work for him, duration and diligence used in the aforementioned work up to this free and lovingly…”
The assignment was for a year and I would be paid one florin a day to fulfill my role.
For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you by making an appointment for the next posts and on social media.
