Canova: battuto all’asta il busto di Elena per 2,9 milioni di sterline
Ieri pomeriggio è stato battuto all’asta il Busto di Elena del Canova durante la Classic Week a Londra organizzata da Christy’s per una cifra di 2,9 milioni di sterline.
Il Busto di Elena scolpito nel marmo di Carrara fra il 1816 e il 1817 dal grande artista celebra la figura mitologica greca di Elena di Troia ed è stato la punta di diamante della vendita. Era stimato fra i 2,5 e i 4 milioni di sterline equivalenti in questo momento a 2,9 e 4,6 milioni di euro: il prezzo finale non ha superato le aspettative dunque.
Il Busto di Elena fu regalato da Canova in persona al politico inglese Robert Castlereagh come riconoscimento degli sforzi che aveva fatto per garantire il ritorno delle opere d’arte in Italia trafugate dalle truppe napoleoniche.
L’opera poi passò di mano da erede in erede rimanendo sempre fra le mura della residenza della famiglia Castlereagh.
La testa decorata con i riccioli che così bene identificano il grande Canova, nel corso della storia è stata esposta solo due volte al pubblico. La prima nel 1972 alla Royal Academy of Arts di Londra e l’ultima nel 1997 all’Ashmolean Museum di Oxford.
L’opera di Canova in questione fa parte della serie delle teste ideali scolpite da Canova che l’artista realizzò durante la sua carriera.
Al momento non è dato sapere chi siano i nuovi proprietari di questo capolavoro.

Canova: bust of Elena auctioned for 2.9 million pounds
Yesterday afternoon the Bust of Elena by Canova was auctioned during the Classic Week in London organized by Christy’s for an amount of 2.9 million pounds.
The Bust of Helen sculpted in Carrara marble between 1816 and 1817 by the great artist celebrates the Greek mythological figure of Helen of Troy and was the spearhead of the sale. It was estimated at between 2.5 and 4 million pounds, equivalent at this time to 2.9 and 4.6 million euros: the final price therefore did not exceed expectations.
The Bust of Helena was given by Canova himself to the English politician Robert Castlereagh in recognition of the efforts he had made to ensure the return of the works of art to Italy stolen by Napoleon’s troops.
The work then changed hands from heir to heir, always remaining within the walls of the Castlereagh family residence.
The head decorated with the curls that so well identify the great Canova has only been exhibited to the public twice throughout history. The first in 1972 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the last in 1997 at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
The work by Canova in question is part of the series of ideal heads sculpted by Canova that the artist created during his career.
