La Scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Madre di Antonio Ugo, realizzata dall’artista siciliano nel 1905.

L’opera appartenente alla Galleria di Arte Moderna di Palermo, ci regala un momento di tenerezza fa madre e figlio. Scolpita a mezzo busto, la donna stringe al petto suo figlio privo di qualsiasi veste.

La madre ha un’espressione malinconica che si contrappone a quella più giocosa del bambino. Probabilmente il piccolo ha appena finito di mangiare e lo si intuisce guardando la camicia aperta della mamma.

Lo scultore Antonio Ughi vissuto a cavallo fra l’Ottocento e il Novecento, aveva l’abilità di cogliere e tradurre in marmo, momenti della vita quotidiana riempiendoli di poesia.

Ugo nacque a Palermo il 22 gennaio del 1870 e a quattordici anni entrò a bottega presso lo scultore Francesco Griffo Saporito.

Padre del celeberrimo architetto Giuseppe Vittorio, vinse un pensionato artistico a Roma. Nella città eterna ebbe modo di frequentare la bottega di Ercole Rosa.

Nel 1981 partecipò per la prima volta all’Esposizione Nazionale Italiana con ben due opere: Sul cannone della Gancia e Se viene il Babbo.

Da quella data in poi presentò numerose sculture a diverse manifestazioni di importanza internazionale e fu giudice per tre volte della Biennale di Venezia.

Fra le sue opere più apprezzate c’è sicuramente la Madre, scolpita nei primi anni in cui inizò a riscuotere l’approvazione della parte della critica e del pubblico.

The Sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Mother of Antonio Ugo, created by the Sicilian artist in 1905.

The sculptor Antonio Ughi who lived between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, had the ability to capture and translate into marble moments of daily life, filling them with poetry.

Ugo was born in Palermo on 22 January 1870 and at the age of fourteen he entered the workshop of the sculptor Francesco Griffo Saporito.

Father of the famous architect Giuseppe Vittorio, he won an artistic pensioner in Rome. In the Eternal City he was able to frequent the workshop of Ercole Rosa.

In 1981 he took part in the Italian National Exhibition for the first time with two works: Sul cannone della Gancia and If the Santa comes.

From that date on he presented numerous sculptures at various events of international importance and was a three-time judge of the Venice Biennale.

Among his most appreciated works by him there is certainly the Mother, sculpted in the first years in which he began to obtain the approval of the critics and the public.
