La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Amore perdonato di Prosper d’Epinay, realizzata dall’artista nel 1888.

La mitologia classica è ricca di storie che riguardano Venere e Amore. D’Epinay scolpì Venere mentre tiene il figlio Cupido fra le braccia perdonandolo di aver trapassato con le sue frecce i cuori sbagliati.

Il soggetto assai spensierato dell’artista ben si prestava a riprodurre un nudo sensuale abbinato a un giocoso cherubino

 Le forme idealizzate di Amore e di Venere così come la superficie accuratamente lucidata caratterizzano non solo le opere di D’Epinay ma tutte quelle che riscuotevano il maggior successo al Salone di Parigi di fine Ottocento.

Prosper d’Epinay era figlio di un personaggio politico di spicco dell’epoca e nacque nelle Maurutius britanniche nel luglio del 1836. Si trasferì a Parigi nel 1851 e cominciò a lavorare come caricaturista prima di iniziare il suo percorso di studi in scultura.

Particolarmente apprezzato per i suoi primi busti dei membri dell’alta società come per quelli che ritraevano Edoardo il principe di Galles, iniziò a veder crescere la sua popolarità.

La scultura Amore perdonato fu acquistata dal soprano d’opera svedese Crhistine Nillson e prima della metà del Novecento ne venne in possesso la famiglia Lydia Aspegren di Norfolk, che volle donare la scultura di Prosper d’Epinay nel 1963 al Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences .
