La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Bella Addormentata dello scultore tedesco Louis Sussmann-Hellborn.

La principessa delle favole dorme sedendo su un trono scolpito nel marmo e circondato da delicati rami di rose. L’opera appartiene all’Alte Nationalgalerie di Berlino e fu realizzata dall’artista nel 1878.

Appoggiato sopra la base della scultura si nota la presenza del fuso con la punta in metallo il cui colore contrata nettamente con il candore di tutta l’opera.

Lo scultore berlinese Louis-Sussmann Hellborn così scelse di raffigurare il momento più intenso della celeberrima fiaba di tradizione europea, messa per la prima volta nero su bianco da Giambattista Basile anche se le versioni più raccontata sono quelle di Charles Perrault del 1697 e dei fratelli Grimm del 1812.

Hellborn fu un apprezzato scultore ma anche abile pittore e illuminato collezionista della Berlino di fine Ottocento. Fu uno dei fondatori del Museo Reale delle Arti Decorative ed ebbe modo di dar forma a sculture di grandi dimensioni senza avere alle spalle un committente.

Vivendo in una situazione economica assai agiata, poteva permettersi di comprare il marmo pagandolo di tasca sua, prima ancora di avere la certezza di poter vendere a qualcuno l’opera finita.

La Bella Addormentata fu la sua scultura di maggior successo dell’artista che mai si sarebbe immaginato che dopo la sua morte, a partire dagli anni venti del Novecento, sarebbe stata eletta a simbolo del periodo storico che la Germania stava attraversando.

A insaputa degli artisti, spesso le loro creazioni assumono significati differenti a seconda del momento storico che attraversano.

La Bella Addormentata fu letta come la Germania che mentre dormiva comodamente fu svegliata all’improvviso dalla rivoluzione che poco dopo l’avrebbe condotta all’unificazione nazionale e alla trasformazione da monarchia a repubblica.

Quest’opera di Hellborn è particolarmente curata in ogni dettaglio. La veste della giovane le fascia il busto e le braccia mettendone in evidenza le forme e termina con un ampio panneggio che le copre le gambe. Da sotto l’abito compare la punta di una scarpa dalle forme semplici ed essenziali.

Il sonno della Bella Addormentata dura da tempo e le rose hanno avuto il tempo di crescere e avvolgere sia il trono che la parte più bassa del corpo della ragazza.

Presto quel sonno verrà destato dal principe che accorrerà in soccorso.

Sculpture of the day: Sleeping Beauty of Hellborn

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Sleeping Beauty by the German sculptor Louis Sussmann-Hellborn.

The princess of fairy tales sleeps sitting on a throne carved in marble and surrounded by delicate branches of roses. The work belongs to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin and was created by the artist in 1878.

Leaning on the base of the sculpture, we note the presence of the spindle with the metal tip, the color of which contrasts sharply with the whiteness of the whole work.

The Berlin sculptor Louis-Sussmann Hellborn thus chose to depict the most intense moment of the famous fairy tale of European tradition, put for the first time in black and white by Giambattista Basile even if the most recounted versions are those of Charles Perrault of 1697 and the Brothers Grimm of 1812.

Hellborn was an appreciated sculptor but also a skilled painter and enlightened collector of late nineteenth-century Berlin. He was one of the founders of the Royal Museum of Decorative Arts and was able to give shape to large sculptures without having a client behind him. In fact, living in a very comfortable economic situation, he could afford to buy the marble by paying for it out of his own pocket, even before having the certainty of being able to sell the finished work to someone.

The Sleeping Beauty was his most successful sculpture by the artist who never would have imagined that after his death, starting from the 1920s, it would be elected as a symbol of the historical period that Germany was going through.

Unbeknownst to the artists, their creations often take on different meanings depending on the historical moment they are going through. Sleeping Beauty was read as Germany which, while sleeping comfortably, was suddenly awakened by the revolution which would shortly afterwards lead to national unification and the transformation from monarchy to republic.

Of this work of Hellborn is particularly accurate in every detail. The dress of her young woman wraps her bust and arms highlighting her shapes and ends with a large drapery that covers her legs. From under her dress appears the tip of a shoe with simple and essential shapes.

Sleeping Beauty’s sleep lasted a long time, and the roses had time to grow and envelop both the throne and the lower part of the girl’s body.
