La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Donna sull’Amaca, capolavoro massimo di Antonio Frilli realizzato attorno al 1890.

Antonio Frilli era un abile scultore fiorentino e professore presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. Aprì il suo laboratorio in città in via dei Fossi, nel 1860, dove ancora ha sede la Galleria Frilli.

Lì iniziò a lavorare assieme a pochi assistenti a sculture in marmo di Carrara per prestigiose committenze private.

In pochi anni la raffinatezza delle sue opere lo resero celebre in tutto il continente europeo ed ebbe modo di proporre i suoi capolavori a saloni internazionali in Australia e negli Stati Uniti.

Il Frilli che aveva cominciato la sua carriera artistica eseguendo lavori cimiteriali in marmo e alabastro, ben presto raggiunse eccellenti risultati divenendo uno degli scultori più ambiti del suo tempo.

La Ragazza sull’Amaca è senza dubbio la sua scultura di maggior successo. Scolpita in un blocco unico nel 1890, gli fece conquistare il primo premio al Grand Prize a St. Louis in Missouri.

Di questo capolavoro ne esistono diverse versioni ma la prima realizzata oggi appartiene alla collezione Lord Lloyd Webber.

La giovane distesa sull’amaca sta dormendo completamente nuda. Assopita in un sonno profondo mostra una dolce espressione sul volto. Chissà cosa sta sognando, viene da domandarsi osservandola.

Mentre appoggia la mano destra su ventre, lascia scivolare il braccio sinistro verso il pavimento con la mano che sfiora un delicato panneggio.

L’amaca presenta una rete finemente lavorata. Osservate il panneggio che di suoi piedi scende verso il basso: un tessuto damascato di mirabile fattura.

La ragazza poggia il capo sopra un cuscino che rende l’idea di essere morbido e accogliente nonostante sia marmo.

Senza dubbio il modellato dell’opera del Frilli era fuori dagli schemi. Non si hanno infatti notizie prima di allora di un soggetto così complicato da realizzare e coraggioso. Tutto il peso dell’opera è sostenuto dai due pali che reggono l’amaca e dal panneggio posizionato strategicamente in quel modo per distribuire meglio il carico.

La cura dei particolari è massima sia per quanto riguarda le finiture che il corpo della giovane distesa.

Sculpture of the day: the Woman in the Hammock by Frilli

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Woman in the Hammock, Antonio Frilli’s greatest masterpiece created around 1890.

Antonio Frilli was a skilled Florentine sculptor and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He opened his workshop in the city in via dei Fossi, in 1860, where the Frilli Gallery is still located.

There he began to work together with a few assistants on sculptures in Carrara marble for prestigious private commissions.

In a few years, the refinement of his works made him famous throughout the European continent and gave him the opportunity to present his masterpieces at international exhibitions which took place in Australia and the United States.

Frilli who had begun his artistic career executing cemetery works in marble and alabaster, soon achieved excellent results, becoming one of the most coveted sculptors of his time.

The Girl in the Hammock is undoubtedly his most successful sculpture. Carved in a single block in 1890, it won him the first prize at the Grand Prize in St. Louis, Missouri.

There are several versions of this masterpiece but the first one made today belongs to the Lord Lloyd Webber collection.

The young woman lying in the hammock is sleeping completely naked. She dozing off in a deep sleep she shows a sweet expression on her face. Who knows what she is dreaming one wonders by observing her.

As she rests her right hand on her belly, she lets her left arm slide towards the floor with her hand brushing a delicate drapery.

The hammock features a finely crafted net. Look at her drapery that descends from her feet: a damask fabric of admirable workmanship.

The girl rests her head on a pillow that gives the idea of being soft and welcoming despite being marble.

Without a doubt, the modeling of Frilli’s work was outside the box. In fact, there was no news before then of such a complicated and courageous subject to make. All the weight of the work is supported by the two poles that hold the hammock and the drapery strategically placed in that way to better distribute the load.

The attention to detail is maximum both as regards the finishes and the body of the young expanse.
