Aveva ventiquattro anni all’epoca e io ne avevo solo sei: m’aveva partorito a diciotto.
A chi giova?
My two moms
I have had two mothers but in the end I had none. I immediately had to become aware of a not at all affectionate father who paid little attention to me and my brothers except for purely practical things.
It will be enough for you to read one of the many letters that he wrote to me during the course of his long life to realize that there is never a loving and caring reference, however minimal, towards me.
My mother Francesca di Ser Miniato del Sera gave birth to five children but unfortunately the Almighty called her before her when she was still very young. She was twenty-four at the time and I was only six: she had given birth to me at eighteen.
The time I spent with her was very little and I only remember her face when sometimes I dream of her still holding me in her arms, cradling me.
After my baptism I was put to nurse in Settignano by a wife and daughter of skilled stonemasons, as was the custom at the time among gentlemen even though we weren’t gentlemen at all. My father wanted to let others know that he could afford that luxury: cursed useless appearance!
The craze of wanting to look like what you’re not, what’s the use? Who benefits?
My father Lodovico, who was also a widower when he was young, thought well of remarrying without suspecting the least of what would happen to his wife afterwards.
The second wife, with good will but little ability, tried to be a second mother to me and my brothers. Her name was Lucrezia degli Ubaldini but she too did not live long. A few years later, in 1497, she died without having given birth to children with my father.
At that moment I had already left for Rome and I was busy with the sculpture of Bacchus for Cardinal Riario.
For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you by making an appointment for the next posts and on social media.
