Capovolto sotto sopra il cartone dell’Epifania del British Museum
Come vi avevo annunciato tempo fa, il cartone dell’Epifania al momento è in restauro.
Proprio in questi giorni il team di restauratori del British Museum ha capovolto sotto sopra l’opera per controllarne il verso, caratterizzato da un controfondo di fogli di carta marrone, realizzato nel XIX secolo.
E’ la prima volta in 100 anni che il verso è completamente visibile. Questa operazione è fondamentale per pianificare gli step successivi del restauro. Sono infatti presenti alcuni strappi che interessano sia il controfondo che il cartone vero e proprio.
Il cartone misura 2,32 metri di altezza per 1,65 di larghezza e quindi, per girarlo è stato necessario effettuare un’operazione assai delicata, inserendo l’opera fra due assi rigide rinforzate.
Tutta la superficie del cartone è stata protetta e le ondulazioni della superficie sono state imbottite con ovatta di poliestere per evitare di sollecitarle eccessivamente durante il rovesciamento.
Il video che vi propongo a seguire della complessa operazione è stato girato da @conservationinfocus, la pagina del British Museum che mostra il dietro le quinte degli importanti restauri che vengono eseguiti presso il laboratori di restauro dell’omonimo museo.
Al termine del restauro, l’Epifania verrà rimontata sopra un pannello a nido d’ape in alluminio molto leggero ma rigido per consentire a tutti di vedere i bordi del cartone. Le operazioni in corso dovrebbero essere portate a termine entro il maggio 2024, quando il cartone verrà poi esposto in modo permanente nel museo.

Turned upside down the cartoon of the Epiphany of the British Museum
As I announced to you some time ago, the Epiphany cartoon is currently being restored.
Just recently, the British Museum’s team of restorers has turned the work upside down to check its direction, characterized by a background of sheets of brown paper, made in the 19th century.
It is the first time in 100 years that the verse is fully visible. This operation is essential for planning the subsequent steps of the restoration. In fact, there are some tears affecting both the backing and the cardboard itself.
The cardboard measures 2.32 meters in height by 1.65 in width and therefore, to turn it it was necessary to carry out a very delicate operation, inserting the work between two rigid reinforced boards.
The whole surface of the carton has been protected and the corrugations of the surface have been padded with polyester wadding to avoid excessive stress during the overturning.
The video that I propose to follow of the complex operation was shot by @conservationinfocus, the British Museum page that shows the behind the scenes of the important restorations that are carried out at the restoration laboratory of the museum of the same name.
At the end of the restoration, the Epiphany will be reassembled on a very light but rigid aluminum honeycomb panel to allow everyone to see the edges of the cardboard. The ongoing operations should be completed by May 2024, when the cardboard will then be permanently exhibited in the museum.
