La Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana mi era già stata commissionata nel 1519 da papa Leone X in accordo col suo cugino, il cardinale Giulio de’ Medici, futuro papa Clemente VII.

Fatto sta che in quel momento ero impegnato con i lavori della Sagrestia Nuova e rimandai la sua costruzione al 1524, dopo l’elezione del secondo papa Medici. In un solo anno ero riuscito a far portare a termine le fondamenta, i contrafforti esterni e a far realizzare la struttura della sala di lettura.

Nell’aprile del 1524 papa Clemente VII si prese la briga di farmi sapere che alla fine della Sala di Lettura avrebbe voluto progettassi non una cappella come era stato preventivato in origine, bensì una “libreria secreta per tenere certi libri più pretiosi che gli altri”.

Fu Giovan Francesco Fattucci a scrivermi in una lettera, il 12 aprile del 1525, di questo desiderio papale.

Mi misi subito al lavoro per realizzare il progetto di questa piccola biblioteca nella biblioteca ma alla fine poi rimase solo un’idea su carta.

Nell’autunno del 1525 ero pronto per metter mano al vestibolo anche se rimanevano da risolvere alcune questioni sull’illuminazione. Pochi mesi dopo però insorsero importanti problemi economici per il papa e mi chiese esplicitamente di contenere le spese. Nel 1527, a seguito del Sacco di Roma, la situazione precipitò.

A Firenze al potere mediceo subentrò quello repubblicano che sostenevo a spada tratta. Furono anni complicati quelli e per forza di cose i lavori alla Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana si interruppero bruscamente fino al 1530.

Affidai la realizzazione dei banchi di lettura che già avevo progettato tempo prima a degli abili intagliatori e ne settembre del 1533 risulta che sei carpentieri in contemporanea si stavano occupando dei banchi mentre altri sei erano all’opera per intagliare il soffitto.

La storia della Scala poi è ancora più complessa e articolata e ve ne ho parlato a suo tempo QUA.

Dopo anni di intenso lavoro e interruzioni, la Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana fu aperta al pubblico nel giugno del 1571, quando oramai ero passato a miglior vita sia io che i committenti.

The history of the Laurentian Library

The Laurentian Library had already been commissioned to me in 1519 by Pope Leo X in agreement with his cousin, Cardinal Giulio de ‘Medici, the future Pope Clement VII.

I immediately set to work to carry out the project for this small library in the library but in the end it was only an idea on paper.

In the autumn of 1525 I was ready to put my hand to the vestibule even if some questions about lighting remained to be resolved. A few months later, however, important economic problems arose for the pope and he explicitly asked me to contain expenses. In 1527, following the Sack of Rome, the situation worsened.

In Florence, the Republican power took over from the Medici power, which I supported with a drawn sword. Those were complicated years and inevitably the works on the Laurentian Library were abruptly interrupted until 1530.

I entrusted the construction of the reading benches that I had already designed some time before to skilled carvers and in September 1533 it appears that six carpenters were working on the benches at the same time while another six were at work to carve the ceiling.

After years of intense work and interruptions, the Laurentian Library was opened to the public in June 1571, when both myself and the patrons had passed away.
