La Battaglia dei Centauri e la parte mancante
La Battaglia dei Centauri è una mia opera giovanile che appartiene a Casa Buonarroti. Da poco restaurata, è esposta assieme alla Madonna della Scala nella Sala dei Marmi.
Nel 1612 Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane cominciò ad allestire al primo piano del palazzo di Via Ghibellina che aveva fatto ristrutturare la Galleria a mia memoria.
Per poter inserire la Battaglia dei Centauri in uno dei lati corti di questa nuova Galleria, nel 1614 pensò di far segare il retro dell’opera tagliando una fetta di marmo.
Fu lo scalpellino Taccone ad eseguire il lavoro e togliendo così uno spessore di circa 4 centimetri.
Che fine fece quella porzione di marmo tolta dal retro della Battaglia dei Centauri? Il mio pronipote volle farci scolpire sopra un’epigrafe dall’artista e architetto Gherardo Silvani per poi posizionarla diversi anni dopo sulla parete opposta della Galleria.
Quell’incisione fu messa immediatamente sotto la scultura che mi ritraeva realizzata dal bravo scultore Antonio Novelli.
La Battaglia dei Centauri rimase in quella collocazione fino al 1874, anno in cui fu trasferita nella sala in cui ancora oggi è possibile ammirarla.

The Battle of the Centaurs and the missing part
The Battle of the Centaurs is my early work that belongs to Casa Buonarroti. Recently restored, it is exhibited together with the Madonna della Scala in the Sala dei Marmi.
In 1612 Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger began to set up on the first floor of the building in Via Ghibellina that he had had the Gallery renovated in my memory.
In order to be able to insert the Battle of the Centaurs in one of the short sides of this new gallery, in 1614 he decided to have the back of the work cut by cutting a slice of marble.
It was the stonemason Taccone who carried out the work and thus removing a thickness of about 4 centimeters.
What happened to that portion of marble removed from the back of the Battle of the Centaurs? My great-grandson wanted to have an epigraph sculpted on it by the artist and architect Gherardo Silvani and then placed it several years later on the opposite wall of the Gallery.
That engraving was immediately placed under the sculpture that portrayed me made by the good sculptor Antonio Novelli.
The Battle of the Centaurs remained in that location until 1874, when it was moved to the room where it is still possible to admire it today.
