Apre oggi al pubblico la mostra I Pittori di Pompei al Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna e si prospetta essere una delle più interessanti di questa nuova stagione espositiva.

Il percorso espositivo gira attorno alle figure dei pictores cioè gli artisti e gli artigiani che dedicarono gran parte della loro vita a realizzare gli apparati decorativi di Pompei, Ercolano e dell’area vesuviana.

Uno spaccato figurato sulla società del tempo, sulla condizione economica di chi viveva nelle domus ma anche uni studio approfondito sulle tecniche, i modelli, gli strumenti e i pigmenti adoperati per realizzare gli stupefacenti affreschi che hanno resistito all’eruzione del Vesuvio e allo scorrere inesorabile dei secoli.

Gli affreschi caratterizzati ancora oggi da vivaci colori e spesso di grandi dimensioni rende possibile fare un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo. Osservare quelle figure arrivate fino a noi è come entrare direttamente nelle botteghe del tempo e nel loro sistema produttivo per comprenderne meglio i meccanismi.

Sono davvero esigue le informazioni giunte a noi relative a chi ha dipinto queste opere, spesso di grandi dimensioni e quasi nessuno dei loro nomi sono noti.

Grazie però alle numerose testimonianze pittoriche conservate dopo l’eruzione avvenuta nel 79 d.C. e portate alla luce dalle grandi campagne di scavi borbonici nel Settecento, le cittadine vesuviane di fatto sono diventate un osservatorio privilegiato per comprendere meglio l’organizzazione interna e l’operato delle officine pittoriche.

E’ la prima volta che a Bologna viene esposto un corpus così importante e cospicuo di pittura romana, provenienti dalle domus note per le loro stupefacenti decorazioni. Spesso queste case prendono il loro nome dagli affreschi che le caratterizzano come la domus del Poeta Tragico, dell’Amore punito e dalle Ville di Fannio Sinistore a Boscoreale, e dei Papiri a Ercolano.

Lungo il percorso espositivo ci si trova faccia a faccia con un’ampia selezione degli schemi compositivi più adoperati durante i differenti periodi dell’arte romana.

Alcuni artisti avevano l’abilità di dare ai modelli decorativi una visione propria senza però tralasciare le mode del momento e lo stile del proprio tempo.

Negli affreschi si vedono scene di accoglienza dell’ospite, dettagliate immagini di paesaggi e giardini e architetture ma non solo. Nelle teche sono esposti numerosi strumenti per la progettazione e l’esecuzione del lavori come pigmenti, squadre, compassi, fili a piombo, disegni preparatori, reperti originali ritrovati nel corso degli scavi di Pompei incluse coppe ancora ripiene di colori che hanno duemila anni di storia alle spalle.

La mostra propone anche la ricostruzione di interi ambienti pompeiani come quelli della Casa di Giasone e, ancora di più della straordinaria domus di Meleagro con i suoi grandi affreschi con rilievi a stucco, per raccontare il rapporto tra spazio e decorazione, frutto della condivisione di scelte e di messaggi da trasmettere, tra i pictores e i loro committenti.

Mentre nel mondo della Grecia classica i pittori erano “proprietà dell’universo”  come scrive Plinio il Vecchio, al tempo dei romani, i pictores erano considerati abili artigiani e sono pochi quelli che si conquistarono il ruolo di artista per la raffinatezza delle loro opere.

Curata da Mario Grimaldi e prodotta da MondoMostre, l’esposizione è resa possibile da un accordo di collaborazione culturale e scientifica tra Comune di Bologna | Museo Civico Archeologico e Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli che prevede il prestito eccezionale di oltre 100 opere di epoca romana appartenenti alla collezione del museo partenopeo, in cui è conservata la più grande pinacoteca dell’antichità al mondo.

Grazie alla collaborazione tra il Servizio Educativo del Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna e ASTER srl Archeologia Storia e Territorio è disponibile una ricca offerta di attività didattico-educative per le scuole di ogni ordine e grado e per il pubblico adulto.

The Painters of Pompeii: the most interesting exhibition of the moment

Today the exhibition The Painters of Pompeii opens to the public at the Archaeological Civic Museum of Bologna and promises to be one of the most interesting of this new exhibition season.

The exhibition itinerary revolves around the figures of the pictores, that is, the artists and artisans who dedicated most of their lives to creating the decorative elements of Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Vesuvian area.

A figurative cross-section on the society of the time, on the economic condition of those who lived in the domus but also an in-depth study on the techniques, models, tools and pigments used to create the amazing frescoes that resisted the eruption of Vesuvius and the inexorable flow of centuries.

The frescoes still characterized today by bright colors and often large makes it possible to take a journey back in time. Observing those figures that have come down to us is like entering directly into the workshops of the time and their production system to better understand their mechanisms.

Very little information has come to us about who painted these works, often large and almost none of their names are known.

However, thanks to the numerous pictorial evidence preserved after the eruption in 79 AD. and brought to light by the great Bourbon excavations in the eighteenth century, the Vesuvian towns have in fact become a privileged observatory to better understand the internal organization and work of the painting workshops.

It is the first time that such an important and conspicuous corpus of Roman painting has been exhibited in Bologna, coming from the domus known for their amazing decorations. Often these houses take their name from the frescoes that characterize them as the domus of the Tragic Poet, of Punished Love and from the Villas of Fannio Sinistore in Boscoreale, and of the Papyri in Herculaneum.

Along the exhibition path you come face to face with a wide selection of the most used compositional schemes during the different periods of Roman art.

Some artists had the ability to give decorative models their own vision without neglecting the fashions of the moment and the style of their time.

In the frescoes you can see scenes of welcoming the guest, detailed images of landscapes and gardens and architecture, but not only. In the display cases there are numerous tools for the design and execution of the work such as pigments, squares, compasses, plumb lines, preparatory drawings, original artifacts found during the excavations of Pompeii including cups still filled with colors that have two thousand years of history behind.

The exhibition also offers the reconstruction of entire Pompeian rooms such as those of the House of Jason and, even more so, of the extraordinary Domus of Meleager with its large frescoes with stucco reliefs, to tell the relationship between space and decoration, the result of sharing choices and of messages to be transmitted, between the pictores and their clients.

While in the world of classical Greece the painters were “property of the universe” as Pliny the Elder writes, at the time of the Romans, the pictores were considered skilled craftsmen and there are few who conquered the role of artist for the refinement of their works.

Curated by Mario Grimaldi and produced by MondoMostre, the exhibition is made possible by a cultural and scientific collaboration agreement between the Municipality of Bologna | Civic Archaeological Museum and National Archaeological Museum of Naples which provides for the exceptional loan of over 100 works from the Roman era belonging to the collection of the Neapolitan museum, which houses the largest art gallery of antiquity in the world.

Thanks to the collaboration between the Educational Service of the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna and ASTER srl Archeology, History and Territory, a rich offer of didactic-educational activities is available for schools of all levels and for the adult public.
