Il 29 giugno del 1633, in occasione delle celebrazioni dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, papa Urbano VIII Barberini inaugurò con tutta la pompa magna del caso il maestoso Baldacchino del Bernini prima di assistere sul calar della sera ai fuochi della Girandola che avevo ideato io anni prima per papa Giulio II della Rovere, a Castel Sant’Angelo.

Alto 28,75 metri per un peso complessivo di 61mila chili, il baldacchino si eleva su quattro colonne tortili alte 11 metri, paragonabili a quelle che decoravano l’antica basilica costantiniana di San Pietro. E’ un autentico capolavoro del Barocco che a distanza i secoli continua a destare meraviglia in chi lo vede con i propri occhi per la prima volta e in chi di tanto in tanto torna ad ammirarlo.

Una curiosità

Guardate bene nell’incavo delle chiavi papali: si nota la presenza di un volto scolpito di donna. Ogni volto mostra un’espressione differente per ciascuno degli otto stemmi.

Sul significato di questi volti femminini sono varie le interpretazioni e, una di queste, sostiene che raffigurino le espressioni durante le diverse fasi del parto. Chissà…

Il rosario, i grandi putti e le lucertole

I putti e gli angeli inginocchiati, seduti e in piedi che si trovano sulla sommità appaiono alla vista molto piccoli ma in realtà i più grandi sono alti circa due metri e mezzo.

Fra le particolarità presenti nel Baldacchino c’è il rosario. Nella colonna posteriore sinistra il Bernini folle fondere un rosario per dedicare i suo grande capolavoro alla Madonna. Sono ben evidenti il Crocifisso e le tre medaglie devozionali che raffigurano San Pietro, San Paolo e la porta del Giubileo del 1625. 

A distanza molto ravvicinata si può notare la presenza di alcune lucertole. La lucertola fu messa come simbolo della trasformazione, rinascita e quindi della Resurrezione.

29 June 1633: the inauguration of Bernini’s canopy

On 29 June 1633, on the occasion of the celebrations of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Urban VIII Barberini inaugurated the majestic Bernini Baldacchino with all the pomp of chance before attending the Pinwheel fires that I had created years earlier. for Pope Julius II della Rovere, in Castel Sant’Angelo.

28.75 meters high for a total weight of 61 thousand kilos, the canopy rises on four twisted columns 11 meters high, comparable to those that decorated the ancient Constantinian basilica of St. Peter. A curiosity

Take a good look at the recess of the papal keys: you can see the presence of a sculpted woman’s face. Each face shows a different expression for each of the eight coats of arms.

There are various interpretations on the meaning of these feminine faces and, one of these, claims that they depict the expressions during the different stages of childbirth. Maybe…
