Il 30 marzo del 1527 l’Esercito Imperiale aveva cominciato a spostarsi verso Sud e le truppe, senza stipendio erano fuori controllo.

C’era il timore che arrivassero presto in quel di Firenze a causa della prossimità dell’Esercito della legna di Cognac, di cui una parte era comandata da Francesco Maria della Rovere, al tempo duca d’Urbino.

L’Esercito Imperiale invece era sotto la guida di Carlo III duca di Borbone e si stava avvicinandosi sempre di più a Roma. Il 2 maggio era già a Viterbo e il 6 maggio del 1527 sarebbe giunto a destinazione.

Temevo che con il peggiorare a vista d’occhio della situazione non avrei più ricevuto la paga da Clemente VII per il lavoro che stavo svolgendo nella Sagrestia Nuova del San Lorenzo. Scrissi a Giovanni Spina: “Non so se io m’ò da sperare più provvigione“.

Probabilmente avrei continuato a lavorare anche senza ricever altri danari ma quella paura mi spinse a cercare una casa da affittare a minor costo. Fino ad allora avevo preso a pigione un locale appartenente a Spina e con me vivevano la mia domestica e Antonio Mini che andava e veniva come gli pareva.

Vero è che c’avevo pure casa mia in Via Ghibellina ma lì non potevo tornare al momento. Dopo aver litigato col mi babbo e co’ mi fratelli, l’avevo affittata per 22 fiorini all’anno.

Avevo visto giusto; con il Sacco di Roma il papa rimase senza palanche e non m’arrivò più nemmeno mezzo fiorino da lui. Continuavo a vivere nella casa in via dell’Ariento fino a quando non trovai un’altra sistemazione in via di Mezzo.

Dovevo risparmiare e non sapevo fino a quando sarei rimasto in attesa di un nuovo versamento da parte di Clemente VII o chi per lui.

When I moved home to pay the rent less

On March 30, 1527, the Imperial Army had begun to move south and the troops, without salary, were out of control.

Probably I would have continued to work even without receiving more money but that fear led me to look for a house to rent at a lower cost. Until then I had rented a place belonging to Spina and my maid and Antonio Mini lived with me, coming and going as he pleased.

It is true that I also had my home in Via Ghibellina but I couldn’t go back there at the moment. After arguing with my father and my brothers, I had rented it for 22 florins a year.

I was right; with the Sack of Rome the pope was left without palanche and not even half a florin came from him. I continued to live in the house in via dell’Ariento until I found another accommodation in via di Mezzo.

I had to save and I didn’t know how long I would be waiting for a new payment from Clement VII or whoever for him.
