Rome: a portrait of me in the fresco by Jacopino del Conte
In Rome, in the church of San Giovanni Decollato, there is a portrait of me included in a fresco by Jacopino del Conte. Did you know?
This Florentine painter born in 1510 was a pupil of Andrea del Sarto but my influences and those of Pontormo are clearly perceived in his pictorial style.
The church of San Giovanni Battista Decollato is located at the foot of the Campidoglio and was built by the archconfraternity of Mercy, governed by a group of laymen of Florentine origin but residing in Rome who took it upon themselves to assist those sentenced to death until the last moment breath, accompanying them to the gallows and taking care of their burial.
In 1540, Pope Paul III granted the archconfraternity the possibility of freeing one condemned to death every year.
In the fresco of the Announcement of the birth of the Baptist in Zaccaria made in 1535 by Jacopino del Conte there is a portrait of me, most likely included because I too was part of this archconfraternity in his time.
You can see it in the far left part of the entire fresco. I have my gaze turned towards the viewer while the other characters who crowd the scene seem intent on commenting on the scene of the Angel announcing the birth of St. John the Baptist to Zacharias.
For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you by making an appointment for the next posts and on social media.
