Lo scheletro con la cassa da morto sulle spalle: quello strano mio dipinto scomparso
Oggi voglio raccontarvi una faccenda assai curiosa che in pochi conoscono e che riguarda un mio dipinto di cui oggi ahimè non c’è più traccia.
Su una parete interna della mia casa romana di Macel de’ Corvi, avevo dipinto a monocromo uno scheletro che portava a spalla una cassa da morto.
Tale immagine sempre dinnanzi agli occhi era un monito più per me che per gli ospiti che frequentavano l’abitazione per ricordare che per quanto uno si desse da fare in vita, la morte prima o poi lo avrebbe portato con sé.
Questo concetto trovò spazio anche in un mio componimento poetico:
Io dico a voi c’al mondo avete dato
l’anima e ‘l corpo e lo spirto ‘nsïeme:
in questa cassa oscura è ‘l vostro lato.
La testimonianza di quel dipinto su parete in casa mia fu riferita da Bernardo Buontalenti e messa nero su bianco qualche anno dopo da Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane.
L’opera è andata perduta ed è molto probabile l’abbia realizzata nel periodo in cui ero impegnato ad affrescare il Giudizio Universale nella Cappella Sistina.

The skeleton with the coffin on his shoulders: that strange missing painting of mine
Today I want to tell you about a very curious matter that few people know about and which concerns a painting of mine of which today, alas, there is no trace.
On an internal wall of my Roman house in Macel de ‘Corvi, I had painted in monochrome a skeleton carrying a coffin on its shoulder.
This image always in front of the eyes was a warning more for me than for the guests who frequented the house to remember that no matter how busy one was in life, death sooner or later would take him with him.
This concept also found space in one of my poems:
Io dico a voi c’al mondo avete dato

in questa cassa oscura è ‘l vostro lato.
The testimony of that painting on the wall in my house was reported by Bernardo Buontalenti and written in black and white a few years later by Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger.
The work has been lost and it is very likely it was made in the period when I was busy frescoing the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel.
