The wrong arm of the Laooconte

There is a story directly linked to the Laooconte that I want to tell you today. As you may know, the work was found in a vineyard near the Colosseum. As the coils of the marble snake began to pop out of the ground, I rushed to see what was happening. The earth was returning one of the most beautiful works that humanity had borne until then: the Laooconte.

I advised Julius II to buy that masterpiece at any cost and he, who had sniffed the deal before me, offered the owner of the vineyard 600 ducats to take away that masterpiece. It was 1506 and that work was the very beginning of the Vatican Museums. Positioned in the Pope’s Octagonal Courtyard, there was no day that was not visited by artists who wanted to study their features closely. At the Laooconte other precious Greek-Roman works collected by Julius II came to be known as the Belvedere Torso.

At the time of the discovery, however, the Laooconte was without a right arm. That earth had not returned it. It was very fashionable at the time to restore the ancient works by integrating them with the reconstructions of the missing parts. So too the Laooconte found himself a brand new arm in sparkling white marble. The new arm was stretched upwards … I immediately realized that this could not be his position: the muscular tension that the Laocoon presented in his chest and shoulders would have been anomalous if the arm had been put in that way.

And in fact I was right to sell … the original limb was found only at the beginning of the twentieth century and, as I had thought centuries before, it was folded behind the head of the priest. Many copies have been made of Laooconte, but the most famous one belongs to Bandinelli and belongs to the Uffizi collections. Bandinelli reproduced it with his right arm pointing upwards, as he had seen it.

The Laooconte, the one who started the realization of the Vatican Museums, found his lost arm, abandoning the one thought in the sixteenth century by restorers who knew little about human anatomy.
