Il disegno che vi propongo è lo studio eseguito per il panneggio che copre le gambe della Sibilla Eritrea, datato fra il 1508 e il 1512.

La Sibilla Eritrea manterrà poi negli affreschi della Sistina quello stesso manto giallo ripiegato sulla gonna della veste verde.

Perché decisi di affrescare delle veggenti pagane in un luogo così sacro per la Chiesa?

Tutte le sibille dell’antichità avevano profetizzato eventi strettamente collegati alla dottrina cattolica: c’era quella che aveva predetto la fine dei tempi alla stregua di Giovanni nell’Apocalisse, chi la nascita di Nostro Signore e chi, come l’Eritrea, profetizzò la Redenzione.

Non fui certo l’unico che inserì proprio questa sibilla fra i suoi lavori destinati a decorare gli ambienti ecclesiastici. Lo stesso personaggio venne riprodotto anche nel pavimento a intarsi marmorei nel duomo di Siena dedicato a Santa Maria Assunta e nei dipinti medioevali presenti nella superba cattedrale di Salisbury.

Il disegno in questione appartiene alle collezioni del British Museum.

Study for the Eritrean Sibyl

The drawing I propose is the study carried out for the drapery covering the legs of the Eritrean Sibyl, dated between 1508 and 1512.

The Eritrean Sibyl will then keep that same yellow mantle folded over the skirt of her green dress in the Sistine frescoes.

Why did I decide to fresco pagan visionaries in such a sacred place for the Church?

All the sibyls of antiquity had prophesied events strictly connected to Catholic doctrine: there was the one who had predicted the end of time like John in the Apocalypse, who the birth of Our Lord and who, like Eritrea, prophesied the Redemption.

I was certainly not the only one who included this sibyl in his works intended to decorate ecclesiastical environments. The same character was also reproduced in the marble inlaid floor in the cathedral of Siena dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and in the medieval paintings present in the superb Salisbury cathedral.

The drawing in question belongs to the collections of the British Museum.
