Se avete avuto la possibilità di guardare con i vostri occhi il Tondo Doni, certamente non vi sarà sfuggita la sua cornice così particolare e ricca di dettagli assai inusuali. La struttura è complessa e qua e là compaiono palmette, cordoni, ovoli ma anche perle, numerose fusaruole e virgulti di ulivo.

Sulla sua superficie sembrano rincorrersi motivi dorati in oro zecchino che si alternano fra facce mostruose e fogliame quasi come si trattassero di grottesche scolpite.

Le cinque teste

Cinque teste sporgono dalla cornice con espressioni differenti. La testa posta proprio sopra il dipinto è all’unanimità data per certa come quella di Cristo, le altre rimangono un po’ avvolte nel mistero. Solitamente vengono identificate come teste di due profeti quelle più alte mentre quelle in basso dovrebbero raffigurare altrettante sibille mentre c’è chi, nelle figure più femminili, tende a vedere due angeli.

Fatto sta che è una gran bella cornice. Fui io a disegnarla e la scolpirono nel legno i Tasso, gli stessi che realizzarono tutto l’arredo della camera Doni.

I simboli della cornice

Osservando le meravigliose e complicate decorazioni vedrete le tre lune crescenti riproposte più volte: sono il simbolo della casata Strozzi. Il dipinto infatti era destinato ai coniugi Doni ovvero Agnolo Doni e Maddalena Strozzi. Come ebbe modo di scrivere l’umanista Vespasiano da Bisticci in merito proprio agli Strozzi, era “la più bella e la più degna famiglia che fussi a Firenze”.

Intrecciati con le tre lune, ci sono virgulti di ulivo. Questi tralci trovano una spiegazione nel libro dei Salmi della Bibbia: “sarai felice e avrai ogni bene. La tua sposa come vite feconda nell’intimità della tua casa; i tuoi figli come virgulti d’ulivo intorno alla tua mensa.” E’ probabile che quei virgulti siano riferiti proprio a Maria, la figlia tanto attesa della coppia che dimorò anni per arrivare nel grembo della mamma Maddalena.

Sono sicuro che la prossima volta che rivedrete il Tondo Doni, presterete un po’ più di attenzione alla cornice che non è un semplice contorno ma parte integrante del dipinto. Il sempre vostro Michelangelo Buonarroti con i suoi racconti.

The frame of the Tondo Doni

If you have had the opportunity to look with your eyes at Tondo Doni, certainly you will not have missed its frame so special and full of very unusual details. The structure is complex and here and there appear palmettes, cords, ovules but also pearls and numerous fusaroles.

On its surface there are golden patterns that alternate between monstrous faces and foliage, almost as if they were carved grotesques.

Five heads protrude from the frame with different expressions. The head placed just above the painting is unanimously given for certain as that of Christ, the others remain a bit ‘shrouded in mystery. They are usually identified as heads of two prophets higher ones while those at the bottom should depict as many sibyls while there are those who, in the most feminine figures, tend to see two angels.

The fact is that it is a very nice setting. I was the one who designed it and the Tasso family carved it in wood, the same ones who created all the furnishings in the Doni room.

Looking at the wonderful and complicated decorations you will see the three crescent moons repeated several times: they are the symbol of the Strozzi family. In fact, the painting was intended for the Doni spouses or Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi. As the humanist Vespasiano da Bisticci wrote about the Strozzi family, it was “the most beautiful and the most worthy family that was in Florence”.

Intertwined with the three moons, there are olive shoots. These branches find an explanation in the book of Psalms of the Bible: “you will be happy and you will have all good. Your wife as a fruitful vine in the privacy of your home; your children like olive shoots around your table” .It is likely that those shoots refer to Mary, the long-awaited daughter of the couple who lived for years to arrive in the womb of mother Magdalene.
