A 550 anni dalla mia nascita, avvenuta il 6 marzo del 1475, il Teylers Museum mi rende omaggio con una mostra che aprirà i battenti in autunno.

Dal 15 ottobre 2025 al 25 gennaio 2026 sarà possibile visitare il percorso espositivo “Michelangelo and Men” che avrà come tema centrale il corpo maschile, gli studi che gli dedicai ma anche il fascino che ne subivo.

Saranno oltre 20 i disegni provenienti direttamente dalle collezioni del Teylers Museum presenti nel percorso espositivo ai quali si aggiungeranno prestiti internazionali di alto livello. Tutte le opere presenti mostreranno il ruolo di primo piano che ebbe il corpo maschile sia nella mia vita privata che nella produzione artistica.

Nudo e muscoloso

Ero certamente affascinato dal corpo maschile, presente in molte delle mie opere in qualsiasi posa potesse la mia mente immaginare. Pensate oggi al David per esempio o all’Adamo che affrescai nel riquadro della Creazione. Entrambe opere celeberrime ma che furono rivoluzionarie nel tempo in cui le realizzai.

Il corpo dell’uomo spesso è nudo ma c’è un motivo che va oltre l’erotismo e ha a che fare con la mia radicata fede: Dio ci fece a sua immagine e somiglianza e quindi non potevo non riprodurre un’anatomia umana meno che perfetta. Sarebbe stato un’insulto verso il Creatore.

Prospettive multiple

‘Michelangelo and Men’ analizzerà dunque il corpo maschile nelle opere e nella mia vita da ogni prospettiva possibile. Non mancheranno focus sulle influenze dell’arte antica, sulla vasta conoscenza anatomica che avevo e sull’utilizzo di modelli maschili.

Come accennato prima, la mostra farà luce sul significato teorico e religioso del corpo maschile e sulla mia personale preferenza nel raffigurare uomini invece che donne. L’esposizione affronterà dunque anche temi senza tempo come genere, sessualità e ideali di bellezza.

Disegni, sculture e lettere

Era il 1790 quando il Museo Teylers da poco inaugurato, comprò a Roma una collezione di disegni italiani, tra quali erano compresi 22 disegni miei considerati tra i più belli che realizzai.

Questo nucleo di disegni sarà il fulcro della mostra al quale verranno aggiunti 40 prestiti internazionali tra le quali una scultura. Quale scultura? Ancora non ho notizie a riguardo ma suppongo sia una di quelle mie che gira per mostre. Ipotizzo si possa trattare della ‘Battaglia dei Centauri’, o del ‘Cristo Portacroce’ di Bassano Romano’.

I prestiti arriveranno dalla Royal Collection del Castello di Windsor, dal British Museum di Londra, gli Uffizi, dal Louvre e da altri musei. Presenti anche capolavori miei mai esposti prima nei Paesi Bassi tra i quali “Il Sogno” della Courtauld Gallery di Londra e “Studio per la Sibilla Libica” del Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York.

Michelangelo and Man: The Male Body at the Center of the Teylers Museum Exhibition

550 years after my birth on March 6, 1475, the Teylers Museum pays tribute to me with an exhibition opening this fall.

From October 15, 2025, to January 25, 2026, the exhibition “Michelangelo and Men” will be open to the public. Its central theme will be the male body, the studies I dedicated to it, and my fascination with it.

The exhibition will feature over 20 drawings drawn directly from the Teylers Museum collections, along with high-level international loans. All the works presented will demonstrate the prominent role the male body played in both my private life and my artistic output.

Nude and Muscular

I was certainly fascinated by the male body, present in many of my works in every pose I could imagine. Think today of David, for example, or the Adam I frescoed in the Creation panel. Both are celebrated works, but they were revolutionary at the time.

The male body is often naked, but there’s a reason that goes beyond eroticism and has to do with my deep-rooted faith: God made us in His image and likeness, and therefore I could not help but reproduce a less-than-perfect human anatomy. It would have been an insult to the Creator.

Multiple Perspectives

‘Michelangelo and Men’ will therefore examine the male body in my works and in my life from every possible perspective. There will also be a focus on the influences of ancient art, my extensive anatomical awareness, and my use of male models.

As mentioned previously, the exhibition sheds light on the theoretical and religious significance of the male body and on my personal preference for depicting men over women. The exhibition will therefore also address timeless themes such as gender, sexuality, and ideals of beauty.

Drawings, Sculptures, and Letters

It was 1790 when the recently inaugurated Teylers Museum in Rome purchased a collection of Italian drawings, which included 22 of my drawings, considered among the finest I’ve ever made.

This core collection of drawings will be the centerpiece of the exhibition, which will be complemented by 40 international loans, including a sculpture. Which sculpture? I haven’t heard anything about it yet, but I assume it’s one of my works that tour around exhibitions. I suspect it could be the “Battle of the Centaurs” or the “Christ Carrying the Cross” by Bassano Romano.

The loans will come from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, the British Museum in London, the Uffizi, the Louvre, and other museums. Also on display will be masterpieces of mine never before exhibited in the Netherlands, including “The Dream” from the Courtauld Gallery in London and “Study for the Libyan Sibyl” from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
