In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, desidero proporvi un’opera che mi riguarda da molto vicino: il dipinto del Passignano che mi ritrae mentre presento a Papa Pio IV il modello della Basilica di San Pietro al quale stavo lavorando da lungi.

Era stato papa Paolo III Farnese il 1° gennaio del 1547 a nominarmi sovrintendente alla costruzione della Basilica di San Pietro. Mantenni quel ruolo fino all’ultimo giorno della mia esistenza anche se, papa Paolo IV poi mi tolse la rendita a vita per quel lavoro. Continuai comunque a lavorare al progetto senza paga ma per devozione, per redimere i miei peccati o almeno quello che volli precisare.

L’opera in questione fu commissionata dal mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il giovane, per decorare la Galleria di Casa Buonarroti, a Firenze.

Io indosso un capotto di velluto damascato nero e con il dito indice faccio vedere al pontefice le caratteristiche del modello in legno della basilica di San Pietro che avevo fatto realizzare, dopo tanti studi e disegni, al falegname Battista da Carrara tra il 1558 e il 1561.

Sulla scena si muovono un nugolo di chierici e cortigiani.

L’errore nel nome del pontefice

Dovete sapere che in questo dipinto c’è un errore grossolano. L’iscrizione latina posta alla base del dipinto indica in maniera sbagliata il nome di Paolo IV ma in realtà il pontefice in questione è senza dubbio Pio IV. Paolo IV fu invece colui che mi commissionò le fortificazioni che vedete in secondo piano. A quanto pare il Passignano, al secolo  Domenico Cresti, fece un po’ i confusione tra i due papi.

Michelangelo 550: presenting the model of St. Peter’s to Pio IV and the Passignano error

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I would like to present you with a work that concerns me very closely: the painting by Passignano that portrays me while I present to Pope Pius IV the model of St. Peter’s Basilica that I had been working on for a long time.

It was Pope Paul III Farnese who appointed me superintendent of the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica on January 1, 1547. I maintained that role until the last day of my existence even though Pope Paul IV then took away my life income for that work. However, I continued to work on the project without pay but out of devotion, to redeem my sins or at least what I wanted to specify.

The work in question was commissioned by my great-nephew Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, to decorate the Gallery of Casa Buonarroti, in Florence.

I am wearing a black damask velvet coat and with my index finger I show the pontiff the features of the wooden model of St. Peter’s Basilica that I had made, after many studies and drawings, by the carpenter Battista da Carrara between 1558 and 1561.

The mistake in the name of the pontiff

You should know that in this painting there is a gross error. The Latin inscription at the base of the painting incorrectly indicates the name of Paul IV but in reality the pontiff in question is undoubtedly Pius IV. Paul IV was instead the one who commissioned the fortifications that you see in the background. Apparently Passignano, born Domenico Cresti, got a bit confused between the two popes.
