Michelangelo 550: Io che scolpisco un’opera nella neve di Peter Jackson
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, vi propongo alcuni dipinti, sculture e immagini che hanno me come protagonista.
Oggi vi mostro questa gouache su carta realizzata Peter Jackson in cui io vengo raffigurato da ragazzino, alle prese con una scultura nella neve.
Ora dovete sapere che una scultura nella neve davvero la realizzai ma non ebbe certo come soggetto la Madonna Medici, scolpita molti anni dopo per Sagrestia Nuova della Basilica di San Lorenzo, a Firenze.
Oggi quella scultura in marmo è collocata sul cassone che contiene le spoglie di Lorenzo il Magnifico e del fratello Giuliano de’ Medici, assassinato durante la Congiura de’ Pazzi.
Una scultura di neve mi fu commissionata il 20 gennaio del 1494 da Piero de’ Medici. Un’opera effimera che, seppur bellissima a detta di chi ebbe modo di vederla, dopo qualche giorno si dissolse.
Era però un Ercole e non la Madonna Medici che vedete nel disegno.
“Volendo, come giovane, far fare nel mezzo della sua corte una statua di neve, si ricordò di Michelangelo e, fattolo cercare, gli fece far la sua statua e volse che in casa restasse come al tempo del padre” scrisse Luca Landucci.
Vi faccio notare anche un altro insolito particolare che mette in luce il fatto che l’artista britannico Peter Jackson, nato il 4 marzo del 1922 celebre per la striscia a fumetti ‘London is Stranger Than Fiction’ poco conoscesse la mia storia.
La scultura nella neve, come accennato prima, la realizzai a Firenze. Alle mie spalle si vede un cardinale di porpora vestito e con l’ermellino sulle spalle assieme a quello che sembrerebbe essere uno sprezzante Raffaello.
Un’incongruenza sia di luoghi che di tempo. All’epoca avevo 19 anni e Raffaello solo 11: quello che si vede nella foto sembra un uomo molto più grande di me all’epoca, non certo un bambino.

Michelangelo 550: Me sculpting a work in the snow by Peter Jackson
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose some paintings, sculptures and images that have me as the protagonist.
Today I show you this gouache on paper made by Peter Jackson in which I am depicted as a boy, struggling with a sculpture in the snow.
Now you should know that I did create a sculpture in the snow but it certainly did not have as its subject the Medici Madonna, sculpted many years later for the New Sacristy of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, in Florence.
Today that marble sculpture is placed on the chest that contains the remains of Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano de’ Medici, assassinated during the Pazzi Conspiracy.
A snow sculpture was commissioned to me on January 20, 1494 by Piero de’ Medici. An ephemeral work that, although beautiful according to those who had the opportunity to see it, dissolved after a few days.
But it was a Hercules and not the Medici Madonna you see in the drawing.
“Wanting, as a young man, to have a snow statue made in the middle of his court, he remembered Michelangelo and, having him search for him, had his statue made and wanted it to remain in the house as it was in his father’s time” wrote Luca Landucci.
I would also like to point out another unusual detail that highlights the fact that the British artist Peter Jackson, born on March 4, 1922, famous for the comic strip ‘London is Stranger Than Fiction’ knew little about my story.
The sculpture in the snow, as mentioned before, I made in Florence. Behind me you can see a cardinal dressed in purple and with an ermine on his shoulders together with what appears to be a scornful Raphael.
An incongruity of both place and time. At the time I was 19 and Raphael was only 11: what you see in the photo seems like a man much older than I was at the time, certainly not a child.
