Michelangelo 550: la Fama che mi esalta nel dipinto di Curradi
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, avvenuta il 6 marzo del 1475, vi propongo un dipinto che mi riguarda da molto vicino: la ‘Fama che fa ascendere Michelangelo all’immortalità’ realizzato da Francesco Curradi.
Si tratta di un dipinto a olio su tela commissionato all’artista dal mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane, figliolo del mi nipote Leonardo.
Nacque nel 1568, quattro anni dopo la mia morte e fu il successore che per primo raccolse la mia eredità artistica e culturale. Fu un personaggio di rilievo nella Firenze della prima metà del Seicento ed era ben introdotto a corte, amico della Granduchessa madre Cristina di Lorena e del Granduca Cosimo II de’ Medici.
A lui dobbiamo l’edificazione di Casa Buonarroti così come la conosciamo oggi e la realizzazione di tutte quelle sale monumentali affrescate fra il 1613 e il 1635 dagli artisti di maggior prestigio che erano a Firenze in quel momento, in primis Artemisia Gentileschi.
Il dipinto della Fama lo potete ammirare al soffitto della Galleria e venne realizzato da Curradi tra il 1616 e il 1617.
L’allegoria della Fama mi invita a salire sopra una gradinata mentre in mano tiene la chiarina pronta a palesare a tutti la mia gloria eterna.
Sullo sfondo, proprio dietro la tromba, si intravede la sagoma del Colosseo.

Michelangelo 550: the Fame that exalts me in the painting by Curradi
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, which took place on March 6, 1475, I propose a painting that concerns me very closely: the ‘Fame that makes Michelangelo ascend to immortality‘ made by Francesco Curradi.
It is an oil painting on canvas commissioned to the artist by my great-grandson Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, son of my nephew Leonardo.
He was born in 1568, four years after my death and was the successor who first collected my artistic and cultural legacy. He was an important figure in Florence in the first half of the seventeenth century and was well introduced at court, a friend of the Grand Duchess Dowager Cristina di Lorena and of the Grand Duke Cosimo II de’ Medici.
We owe him the construction of Casa Buonarroti as we know it today and the creation of all those monumental rooms frescoed between 1613 and 1635 by the most prestigious artists who were in Florence at that time, first and foremost Artemisia Gentileschi.
You can admire the painting of Fame on the ceiling of the Gallery and it was created by Curradi between 1616 and 1617.
The allegory of Fame invites me to climb a flight of steps while holding the clarion in my hand ready to reveal to everyone my eternal glory.
In the background, just behind the trumpet, you can glimpse the outline of the Colosseum.
